Hi there Spinnerb8. We had a discussion on the TT message board about the Ardent reel when it was reported on during Icast. That reel is very similar to a Shimano Brush Buster (but not quite as good in my opinion), which came out in 1985. The Brush Buster lasted until 1988, and a lot were sold. I still use one today on a flipping rod. You can pick up a nice one on eBay for about $25.

Many of the early spinning reels imported into this country from France were very similar to the US spinning reels. The RU reels from France in particular were very similar in appearance, and they were here in the 1950s. In the US Airex made a reel called the VIC that had a very large, thin spool that eliminated the need for the spool to oscillate. They are collectible today.

I'm just loving the diversity TackleTog provides. The team was very well selected and make the blogs really informative.

Not sure if you're familiar with Ardent's F500 Flip-N-Pitch Reel, is this "new"?
Also, the "unique" features on the US reels?

Hey Prosource, thanks for your comments. You have just given me another subject for the "Nothin's New" blog. Over the years there have been many "gadgets" offered that made sounds that were supposed to attract the fish to your boat, or start them on a feeding binge. I'll have to do some research and find some of those offered in the past. Of course none were as advanced technically as the Biosonix since we didn't have the computer and electronic knowledge available today.

As for the first part of your question, of course there are some new developments and innovations; most of them in the area of electronics, but most "new" items are retreads brought back with new materials.

Looking forward to your posts! So often I see old ideas come back as "new" ones. So is there really nothing "new" you have seen in the last few years? How about the Biosonix?
