VanDam dials speed down to take coveted bass title … again

Thursday, February 25th, 2010 by ttnews

The fact that Kevin VanDam won the 2010 Bassmaster Classic last weekend likely didn’t surprise many who follow the sport of bass fishing; he has been the best in the sport and the angler to beat in recent years. It is somewhat ironic though that this same fisherman who is best known for his power-fishing style did have to borrow from technology that dates back to the earliest of Classics – variable speed – to slow down for the cold water conditions found on Alabama’s Lay Lake.

VanDam was one of 34 anglers out of the 51 fishing in the Classic who relied on a foot-controlled variable speed MotorGuide® trolling motor that has a history closely paralleling that of the Classic itself. By 1972, year two for the Classic, MotorGuide inventor G.H. Harris had added variable speed control to the design of his bow-mounted foot-controlled trolling motor introduced 20 years earlier.

Variable speed provided anglers with an infinite range of speed settings from low to high, giving them the exact precision for boat control for any given condition. It was a monumental breakthrough in trolling motor technology and angler versatility. Previously, trolling motors typically had from three to five speed settings, and the selections rarely matched the conditions at hand so anglers often found themselves having to constantly switch from one speed to another.

“I did have to consciously make myself slow down in everything I was doing for this Classic,” VanDam said. “I’m accustomed to putting my MotorGuide on high and covering lots of water in a hurry with lots of casts and fast moving baits. But here it was all about dialing the speed down on my 36-volt motor, going to a 5.3:1 gear ratio baitcast reel, making long casts and working my crankbait really slow across the top of the coontail grass in the area.”

“The water was pretty shallow, so I think it was also important that I was able to move my boat around as quietly with my trolling motor as I was,” VanDam added.

VanDam and most of the others in the Classic using MotorGuide had Tour Edition TR109 Digital models on their boats. They say they prefer this model because it has a stainless steel shaft, a rock-steady Tour Gator Spring® mount bracket and a metal foot pedal … combining form and function to eliminate the flex that comes with plastic parts and to provide the smoothest in cable-steer operation.

Ever since Harris’ invention first hit the market more than 50 years ago, MotorGuide has continued to lead the way in trolling motor innovation. The brand has many firsts to its credit beyond just foot control and digital variable speed, including the retractable bow mount for easy stow and deploy, breakaway mount to protect the motor’s shaft from underwater run-ins, and digital technology for the finest in electronic performance.

Continuous improvements are always occurring within the MotorGuide product lineup, with the most recent coming from BASS Elite Series angler Brent Chapman’s father. Chapman developed a stainless steel pulley for the Tour Edition models to work with their upgraded stainless steel cables to improve upon steering feel and limiting steering torque, even when operating the motor at its highest speed setting of more than 100 pounds of thrust.

Additionally, MotorGuide now also has models that incorporate a built-in Lowrance® 200/83 kHz transducer with temperature sensor for compatibility with Lowrance HDS sonar units. Built-in transducers eliminate damage to cables and transducers from underwater obstructions, plus MotorGuide’s digital technology also helps eliminate sonar interference.

“We’re proud of the fact that the Classic trophy stays with the MotorGuide team once again, with last year’s champion Skeet Reese passing it along to now three-time Classic champion and five-time Angler of the Year Kevin VanDam,” said Kevin Fletcher, vice president of sales and marketing for Attwood Marine, the company that also includes MotorGuide products.

“We’re also proud of Pam Martin-Wells performance in having achieved the highest level ever for a female angler in the Classic, and we’re thrilled that four of the five top finishers on Lay Lake had MotorGuide on front of their boats. Congratulations to Kevin and all of our Classic anglers.”

2010 Opener for IFA Redfish Tour, IFA Kayak Fishing Tour 2/27

Friday, February 19th, 2010 by ttnews

Anglers from across Florida and surrounding regions will converge on Jacksonville, Fla., on February 26 for the first regular-season tournaments for both the IFA Redfish Tour Presented by Cabela’s and the IFA Kayak FishingTour Presented by Hobie Fishing. Saturday’s IFA Redfish Tour event, which will launch from Sister’s Creek Marina and Sunday’s IFA Kayak Fishing Tour, are the first of three regular-season tournaments for the Florida East Coast Division, one of six divisions of IFA Tour events running from the Carolinas to Texas.

The weekend’s activities begin Friday, February 26 with the IFA Redfish Tour registration from 5-7 p.m. at Hampton Inn (4690 Salisbury Road, Jacksonville, FL 32256) with the Captain’s Meeting to follow. Anglers will be launching from Sister’s Creek Marina (8203-2 Hecksher Dr., Jacksonville, FL 32226) at safe light on Saturday for the one-day event. Check-in times will be assigned at the Captains Meeting.

Competitors in the IFA Kayak Fishing Tour Presented by Hobie Fishing will have a registration and captain’s meeting from 6-7 p.m. on Saturday, February 27 at Sister’s Creek Park.  The weigh in will take place at the Hampton Inn on Sunday.  Check-in times will be announced at the Capains Meeting.

Each of the Cabela’s IFA Redfish Tour 18 regular-season events will commence on Saturday with the newly formed IFA Kayak Fishing Tour Presented by Hobie Fishing contested the following day (Sundays). In its inaugural season, the IFA Kayak Fishing Tour Presented by Hobie will feature 18 regular-season, catch-photograph-release events across six different division (mirroring the IFA Redfish Tour format, location and scheduling) as well as extremely lucrative payouts and expanded fishing opportunities for non-motorized fishing crafts.

The redfish/trout tournament will pay twenty places (based on a 100 boat field) plus Big Redfish, Big Trout and Junior Angler Awards. The winner will take home a Hobie Mirage Pro-Angler valued at $2399, 2nd place prize will be a Hobie Mirage Outback, valued at $1,749 and 3rd place a Hobie Quest, valued at $949.

The IFA Redfish Tour continues to draw redfish anglers from Texas to the Carolinas and beyond, offering two-angler teams the opportunity to compete in six different divisions, each offering a three-event regular season. Low entry fees for the one-day, regular-season tournaments allows anglers to fish close to home and minimize expenses, while still being a part of a premier inshore, catch-and-release redfish tournament organization. Teams fishing any three of the IFA’s 18 regular-season events are automatically qualified for a no-entry-fee championship event, pitting qualifiers from each of the six divisions for a combined $78,200 in payouts and prize packages, as well as a shot at the coveted Cabela’s Overall Divisional Team of the Year Award for the six regular-season division winners.

New for 2010, IFA Redfish Tour anglers will be able to increase their winnings with the Cabela’s Angler Cash award and the Angler’s Advantage Award. The Angler’s Advantage Award allows anglers to add $100 to their already-low entry fee for the chance at increased winnings. The optional program pays out 100 percent to those participating teams. The Cabela’s Angler Cash award gives a $1,000 gift card to any team that wins a regular-season tournament while competing with a Cabela’s patch on their clothing (both people must have the patch on). For the no-entry-fee IFA Redfish Tour Championship, the qualified, winning team will receive a $2,500 Cabela’s gift card.  If the winners of an IFA Redfish Tour event are a registered and qualified Ranger Cup compliant team, then they will receive$2,000 (you must sign up every year).

Added in 2009 and continuing in 2010, teams fishing at least six tournaments in any combination of divisions are automatically eligible to compete for the IFA Redfish Tour “Ultra 6 Team of the Year” award. The award consists of a $5,000 cash prize, presented to the highest-finishing eligible team at the IFA Redfish Tour championship tournament.

In addition to a possible $60,000 in payouts per event (based on a 100-boat field), the first-place prize package for all 18 IFA Redfish Tour regular-season events remains extremely lucrative. In 2010, every regular-season tournament winner is guaranteed – regardless of field size – a fully loaded 2010 Ranger Banshee Extreme. The boat is powered by a 60-horsepower, four-stroke Yamaha outboard and is equipped with a Power-Pole shallow water anchor, Minn Kota trolling motor, Humminbird electronics, Blue Point Fabrication metal work, Bob’s four-inch Ultra Light Jackplate and a Loadmaster trailer. The entire first-place prize package is valued at $30,000.

Koppers signs Elite anglers Browning and Velvick

Thursday, February 18th, 2010 by ttnews

On the Eve of the Bassmaster Classic, Koppers Fishing, makers of the ultra-realistic LIVETARGET crank baits, inked deals with Bassmaster Elite pros Stephen Browning and Byron Velvick.

The sponsorship arrangement, spearheaded by Koppers’ Pro Staff Manager Victor Cook, will be under the spotlight at the 2010 Bassmaster Classic in Birmingham, AL. here, Browning and Velvick will duke it out with 49 of the industry’s best for the prestigious top honor and Championship title. “We’re very excited about our new relationships with Byron and Stephen” says Cook; “both are solid anglers with great reputations in the B.A.S.S. arena.”

The LIVETARGET brand made its’ debut in 2008 in the Midwest and Great Lakes Regions, opening 100 dealers its’ first year. Two years later, the Company’s reach now exceeds more than 1,000 dealers in the U.S. and Canada, with distribution into Japan and nine European countries. Despite the accelerated international attention, Cook comments that B.A.S.S. is the ideal platform to launch the Team LIVETARGET pro staff campaign. “They’re at the top of the game” says Cook, “and we’re positioned to show the industry our intentions to participate. Stephen and Byron are truly excited about our line and we feel they will represent our brand with passion and dignity.”

Browning, who had 4 top 10 finishes in 2009, had success at all events with the LIVETARGET brand, including a 5th place in Iowa, where 15 of his 20 fish were caught using the 64 series Craw crank. His success at the event was pivotal in improving his rank to qualify for the Classic on Lay Lake, February 19-21. “I’m really excited about their product line and impressed with the Koppers’ organization,” says Browning, “They are on the cusp of something big and I look forward to growing with them”. Browning will unveil his new threads at the Classic later this week.

Well known Elite Series pro and television personality Byron Velvick will also sport the LIVETARGET colors in the 2010 Bassmaster Elite season. The former “Bachelor” contestant and Bass Center analyst, currently hosts a weekly inshore saltwater show “Going Coastal”, which is both entertaining and educational to ESPN2 viewers. “I became familiar with the LIVETARGET line during the back half of the ’09 Series,” says Velvick. “I immediately fell in love with them. Bottom line…they flat out catch fish.”

Bassmaster Classic 2010: More thoughts from the pros on going pro, gear choices and dreams for the prize money

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010 by ttnews

On this Wednesday, the 2010 Bassmaster Classic contenders are on the water for their last day of practice. Will what they find today have them scratching for a limit on Friday’s first day of competition, or scratching their heads as what to try next to figure out an unusually cold Alabama Lay Lake. We tried to help them break the ice a little by asking them a few more questions about their thoughts and strategies around their fishing and this week’s event.

1. Knowing what you know now at this point in your career about what it takes to sustain a livelihood at professional fishing and be competitive, what advice would you have for someone else wanting to chase the same dream?

Kevin VanDam (Plano pro staff) – Biggest thing is to believe in yourself. Do it your way and to your style. You have to have confidence, and it has to be about your own strengths and abilities; not about trying to emulate someone else. I have anglers telling me their accomplishments, and then want to know if I think they’re ready. My answer is always the same, “Only you can know that.”

Jeff Kriet (Sebile and Jewel Bait Co. pro staff) – I have a lot of people tell me they want to do what I do, fish for a living. But it’s really not true. They say they’re not because they don’t have the time or money. Well, I didn’t have the time or money either when I got started. But I made up my mind and went after it just like I was making a decision to start my own business. If you’ve got the guts and determination to do that, go for it. Be prepared for a ride, and do know that there are going to be sacrifices.

Todd Faircloth (Sebile pro staff)- Be patient, and be prepared for a slow start, in the beginning, especially when it comes to getting sponsors. I felt once I graduated to this level that things would happen in a hurry, but they didn’t. You have to understand that and have the staying power to hang in there until you get things going the way you want.

Kevin Short (Jewel Bait Co. pro staff) – If it’s for a college-aged person or younger, it is to get a college degree in marketing before you do anything else. Having the education and that kind of information on your side is ever bit as important as being able to catch fish. For someone older, learn whatever you can about marketing, however you can. I think it’s the single most important thing toward molding an angler for a long and successful career.

Tommy Biffle (Gene Larew Lures pro staff) – Take up golf at an early age. No, if someone is really serious about this as a career, it’s to spend as much time as possible fishing in all kinds of places and in every type of condition. I’m hearing some guys here this week saying they’ve never fished in water less than 50 degrees before. Then another guy who is in the know was excited to practice while it was snowing because he knew it’s an active time for fish. Fishing for a living, you don’t get to pick the days, times and places to go, so you better be ready to deal with what you’ve got.

Mike McClelland (Jewel Bait Co. pro staff) – Biggest piece of advice is to get an education first, focusing on marketing and business because what we do is a business first and foremost. And don’t get hung up on fishing as many different tournaments as you can. Instead, you’ll be better served by simply spending more time fishing and going to different places and situations.

2. Does cold water and weather make you change your choice of line type or weight?

Kevin VanDam – Not really. I’m pretty much using XPS fluorocarbon for everything; some braid for flipping around the grass. I do use a lot more line conditioner when it’s cold like this because it sheds water and helps keep my rod guides from freezing. I use a Palomar knot for fluorocarbon.

Jeff Kriet – No, not really. If I make any changes it will be going to heavier line because the water is stained and I can get away with it. I’ve got my Jewel jigs on 15 pound fluorocarbon; my Sebile crankbaits are on 15-20 pound test fluoro. I use a San Diego Jam knot on my fluorocarbon, it’s kind of like a Double Uni.

Todd Faircloth – Not really on my line choice, but I do consciously back off on my hooksets just a little. I’m using  mostly fluorocarbon  and because they are low stretch, the extreme cold can brittle them a little so I sure don’t want to break a fish off on an over-powered set.

Kevin Short - Not much of a change. I’ve downsized a little, but mostly using the same type – fluorocarbon. As for my knot, I use an Improved Clinch or a Double Uni on the smaller diameter stuff.

Tommy Biffle – If I do make any changes it will be to bigger instead of smaller. I am using fluorocarbon, Sunline. When fishing is tough you don’t want to take any chances with bites few and far between. I think I can get away with a little bigger line.

Mike McClelland - I’m liking my green Sunline I’ve got spooled for this stained water. I’m using fluorocarbon for my bottom baits, giving me the best line properties for them. For my stickbaits, I go with their monofilament because it doesn’t sink or weight them down.

3. When you have bait that is working well in a tournament, will you have an identically rigged rod and reel with an exact duplicate of that bait on your boat?

Kevin VanDam – Absolutely. I have a backup for everything. I have to be efficient. I don’t want to waste time having to rig or change a bait when I don’t have to.

Jeff Kriet – Lots of times I’ll do exactly that, especially if I’m catching fish on a Carolina rig or drop shot that takes some time to re-rig. More commonly though, I’ve got the same kind of bait tied on but in different colors or sizes. That’s really true with my shaky heads.

Todd Faircloth - Absolutely. It’s going to be right there on my deck where I can get to it in a hurry. Well, if it’s a really hot combo, I actually will keep it in my rod locker until it’s time to fish.

Kevin Short – I’ll definitely have multiple baits at the ready, but not so much identical things tied on. Usually there will be some similar things to what I’m effectively using, but in colors and sizes that give me some more options if I’m needing to change things up in an area to get another bite or two.

Tommy Biffle - Yep, I always have identical rigs of my go-to bait, sometimes as many as three others. If you’re in a key spot, the last thing you want to have to do is lose time by having to re-rig. I like all of my rods and reels to be identical so that every time I pick one up regardless of what I have on it, it’s going to weigh and feel exactly the same.

Mike McClelland - I’ll usually have similar rigs to give me more variations instead of exact duplications. I’ll have variations of bait sizes, colors and styles.

4. Do you weigh and record each keeper fish before it goes into the livewell or what is your fish culling process?

Kevin VanDam – I wish I thought culling was going to be a problem in this Classic. But no, I don’t do that. When it becomes time to assess my catch, I typically go to a balance beam.

Jeff Kriet – I do buoy all of my fish when I catch them. That not only gives me an easy way to keep count of my fish in the livewell, but also an easy way to work with them when it’s time to cull. I use a culling beam for that. As for estimating, I like to go on the light side, then when my weight is more than that I can be as excited as the crowd.

Todd Faircloth – No, I’m not that savvy. My process is always to get a limit first, then I’ll assess my catch and identify what needs to be replaced first.

Kevin Short – I don’t weigh my fish. I do tag them. On my fifth fish I will stop to weigh and record each one so I’ll know the culling order.

Tommy Biffle – I won’t mess with my catch until I have a limit. Then I’ll use a balance beam and tag the littlest one to cull first. Yes, I have messed up on my count. Wasn’t fun and it won’t happen again.

Mike McClelland - I don’t weigh my fish at the time of the catch. Many times you’re in a situation where you catch one fish, you’ll be able to catch another immediately behind it if you’ll get your fish into the livewell quickly and your bait right back in the water. When you have a limit, it’s time to assess your catch.

5.  Imagine this: It’s the final day weigh-in and you’re in line with a limit you believe has you in contention to win. Would you rather be visiting with the other pros in line and listening to predictions, or be totally tuned out and listening to your iPod?

Kevin VanDam – That’s an exciting time, and something to be shared. So many of us fishing in this Classic are good friends, and I enjoy sharing in the thrill win a friend wins. Of course, I’ve been fortunate enough to win a couple myself. It’s a special time.

Jeff Kriet - Oh, I’d be totally tuned out. I’d have some kind of hip-hop going on. I mean old school hip-hop. Just hip-hopping out, waiting to take care of business.

Todd Faircloth – No, I won’t be tuning anything out. I want to know what’s going on. I’ll be intermingling trying to figure who’s got what and what might happen.

Kevin Short - I’ll be listening to my iPod, plugged into a little bit of everything. Might be some Rolling Stones, Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton, u2, and who knows what else.

Tommy Biffle – I don’t mind listening and visiting about what’s going on. It’s over by then, so you’ve either got ‘em or you don’t.

Mike McClelland – On that final day, it’s cool to have an idea of what’s going on. I got into some of that action on the last day at last year’s Classic. I had a good bag of fish that was getting lots of attention, so the adrenalin starts pumping and you do begin to wonder “what if” should the leader have a tough day. I say live the moment to the fullest.

6. When you win the 2010 Bassmaster Classic, what’s the most “fun” thing you would spend part of your prize money on?

Kevin VanDam – It would definitely be something with Sherry and the boys, probably a fun trip somewhere.

Jeff Kriet – I’d be telling my wife, “you want to quit that job, you go right ahead.”

Todd Faircloth – My longtime desire is to have my own land for deer hunting, but that might not be the best option at this point.

Kevin Short - I’ll be taking my wife on a houseboat on Lake Powell for a week, and then who knows what else.

Tommy Biffle – A Kodiak bear hunt in Alaska with my bow.

Mike McClelland – Take the family to Atlantis in the Bahamas. That looks like a fun place to escape for a few days

Bassmaster Classic Cast for $100,000 CASH!

Thursday, February 11th, 2010 by ttnews

Berkley, America’s leading fishing tackle brand, will give one lucky participant at the Bassmaster Classic in Birmingham, Ala., the chance to win $100,000 by simply casting into a target.  During the final weigh-in on February 22, one individual in the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex arena will be randomly drawn from the crowd and allowed to cast to a target on the arena floor.

“The Cast for Cash event has been a big hit of the Classic for some time now,” said John Bartow, Berkley Senior Director of Marketing. “It is a fun opportunity for anyone to have a chance to claim a very large sum of money and the crowd simply loves it. Everyone at the final weigh in has an equal chance to “Cast for Cash” and hopefully someone will walk out of the arena $100,000 richer. Berkley is proud to give this opportunity to the Bassmaster Classic weigh in audience.”

The participant will be given his/her choice of a Berkley/Abu Garcia Spincast, Spinning or Baitcast rod/reel combination spooled with Berkley Trilene fishing line. Renown angler and television host Hank Parker will provide the individual with a one-on-one  practice session to become better acquainted with the tackle for the best chance to win the $100,000 prize. The actual cast will be made during a break in the weigh in, in front of thousands of angling fans.

CHERYL SMITH WINS 2009 BERKLEYBIGFISH GRAND PRIZE

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010 by ttnews

Cheryl Smith loves to fish, and her desire to be on the water is paying off. Her infectious angling passion paid big dividends in the Berkley Big Fish (BBF) Contest for OutdoorGirl1, as she has become known on BerkleyBigFish.com. Smith landed the biggest prize offered – a fishing trip for two with legendary angler Hank Parker.

“I was up against a lot of great anglers on Berkley Big Fish,” said Smith. “The website is so much fun, I can’t get away from it. The voting and pictures that are submitted show that fishing is growing. Families and individuals still love to get outdoors and stay active.”

The St. Charles, Ill., native has been posting pictures of her and anything with gills on BerkleyBigFish.com since early 2009. She has won multiple awards on BBF, most notably being named Elite Angler for the month of April. Smith is also a five-time category winner and has marked her place as one of the standout anglers on the site.

“It’s so good to have a website that is all positive,” said Hank Parker. “Everything about the outdoors should be all about being positive. BerkleyBigFish.com is for any angler wanting to share their story. Cheryl was the crown jewel out of the 22 anglers selected for the Grand Prize. She is held in high regard from her competitors and myself as well.”

BerkleyBigFish is a Web site that celebrates the sport of fishing through creating an online community of dedicated anglers. The almost-12,000 users (nearly double from a year ago) can post photos that are entered into monthly contests and sweepstakes with the chance to win prizes from Berkley, Abu Garcia and other sponsors.

Users have the ability to comment on others’ photos and rate them on a scale of 1 to 5 “bobbers.” Five monthly winners are chosen from these votes based on fish specie (Bass, Trout, Walleye, Inshore Saltwater and Other), with one monthly Grand Prize Finalist being hand-selected by Hank Parker to be in the running for the grand prize.

In addition, monthly “Elite Anglers” are chosen based on skill level to compete for the grand prize alongside monthly finalists. Smith qualified for the grand prize by being named an Elite Angler.

IFA Redfish Tour 2010 Schedule

Monday, November 23rd, 2009 by ttnews

A commitment to offering inshore redfish anglers opportunities for lucrative payouts and low participation costs continues in 2010, evidenced by the IFA Redfish Tour’s recently released 2010 regular-season schedule. The schedule again features 18 regular-season events contested across six different divisions with the tour making stops in some of most famed redfish destinations in the country.

The regular season begins on February 27, 2010, when anglers fishing the Florida East Coast Division converge on Jacksonville, Fla., with the final regular-season event occurring on October 16, 2010, at Orange Beach, Ala., the site of the 2009 IFA Redfish Tour Championship. In all, the 2010 IFA Redfish Tour will come to six states – from Texas to the Carolinas – bringing multiple, close-to-home opportunities for redfish anglers to be a part of a professionally operated tournament without significant investments of time or money normally required when fishing other tours.

Said IFA President Jim Armstrong, “Anglers want to fish and be a part of something fun and lucrative. With one-day tournaments close to home, anglers don’t have to trailer all over the country if they don’t want to do so. Our tournaments continue to be as affordable as they are fun – and best of all, anglers can really cash in on the prize packages and contingencies.”

Each of the 18 regular-season events will commence on Saturday with the newly formed IFA Kayak Fishing Tour Presented by Hobie Fishing contested the following day (Sundays). In its inaugural season, the IFA Kayak Fishing Tour Presented by Hobie Fishing will feature 18 regular-season, catch-photograph-release events across six different division (mirroring the IFA Redfish Tour format, location and scheduling) as well as extremely lucrative payouts and expanded fishing opportunities for non-motorized fishing crafts.

“The IFA is excited to team with Hobie Fishing in offering a second day of competition,” said Bart Schad of the IFA. “A great number of inshore anglers fish from kayaks and this tournament gives this group a chance to compete in a format custom designed for their tactics.”

For more information on the IFA Redfish Tour, to become a member of the IFA or to become a part of the fastest-growing inshore fishing tournament series in the United States, go online to redfishtour.com. For a complete set of the tournament rules and to learn more about The Redfish Tour visit www.redfishtour.com. To discover more about kayaking and Hobie Fishing go to www.hobiefishing.com.

IFA Redfish Tour events are made possible through the sponsorship and continued support of the fishing industry’s most respected brands: Ranger Boats, Hobie Fishing, Cabela’s, Yamaha Outboards, Rapala, Trigger X, Sufix, Minn Kota, Humminbird, Power-Pole, Wrap This, CW Crab, Charter Lakes Marine Insurance, Solar Bat, Gemini Custom Apparel, Navionics, Bob’s Machine Shop, Blue Point Fabrication, Terminator, VMC Hooks, Loadmaster Trailers, Powertex Group and Audubon Aquarium of the Americas.

Skeeter Launches FX Series Bass Boats with New Yamahas

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009 by ttnews

In an industry first, Skeeter Products, Inc. introduces its revolutionary new FX Series, featuring two bass boats designed to be introduced with Yamaha’s new “game changer” Four-Stroke V6 VMAX® SHO™ outboard engines.

Skeeter’s next generation of bass boats, the FX20 and FX21, was designed specifically to run with exceptional performance when combined with Yamaha’s new VMAX SHO 200 hp, 225 hp and 250 hp engines.

“The FX continues our aggressive new product strategy well into the next decade, and our partnership with Yamaha on this boat/motor package enabled us to manufacture a product with a better hole shot and higher top-end speed, with the benefit of the better fuel economy that a four-stroke engine has to offer,” says Jeff Stone, Skeeter Senior Vice President/General Manager.

According to Stone, the FX Series is sure to meet and exceed the demands of tournament anglers and serious bass fishing enthusiasts seeking the highest performing bass boat on the market.  “We took our motto ‘Engineered Like No Other’ to the max with the development of the FX Series,” adds Stone.

For the FX Series, Skeeter increased the size of its sponson area an additional 1.7 cu ft, the equivalent of removing two batteries from the boat.  Next, Skeeter designed wider and sharper strakes along the running surface to provide lift and deflect water for more speed, better turning ability and a smoother ride.  These innovations lead to a dry and stable ride, with no chine walking and no backwash.

Each engine in Yamaha’s VMAX SHO family of outboards has an all-new four-stroke 4.2-liter V6 powerhead that provides the best power-to-weight ratio in its class.  New materials make the engines lighter, more efficient and powerful.  Larger throttle valves, intake and exhaust valves and water pickups ensure peak efficiency and performance.  Yamaha also employed plasma-fused sleeveless cylinders instead of steel sleeves to provide a durable surface for the engine’s piston rings, thus reducing the overall weight of the VMAX SHO by 34 pounds compared to its two-stroke predecessor, the VMAX®.

“In the past, all bass fishermen were concerned about was speed – getting to their fishing spot before anyone else.  Even as times have changed, Skeeter and Yamaha still deliver the speed and fishability that anglers need to be competitive, but with the FX Series, we can also deliver a higher level of overall performance, reliability, efficiency and style in a single boat,” says Ben Jarrett, Skeeter’s National Sales Manager.

“This was a no-compromise effort in the long and tedious design and planning process, building a bass boat series to meet the expectations and demands of what modern fishermen expect in a boat,” says Jarrett.

“The FX20 and FX21 are entirely new boats, with an entirely newly designed deck and hull.  A completely new high performance profile gives the new FX series a completely new look that defines the words under our logo  “Performance Fishing Boats” says Jarrett.

The FX Series features a new Digital Multifunctional System (DMS) that runs a new boat security/alarm system and iForce locks, and also serves as a command center that controls Yamaha’s multifunction gauges.  The cockpit, with available dual-console option, includes tilt hydraulic steering, driver and passenger glove boxes, custom grab handles, side panels, non-skid mats and bump stick holder, and upholstered full-flex seating with an under seat 30-quart ice chest.  A foot-throttle and pro tilt and trim behind the new custom-made performance steering wheel are standard.

“Unlike most bass boat designs, our gas tanks are not located mid-ship under the seats, which allows us to optimize storage space for gear and tackle ” says Jarrett.  The FX20 and FX21 feature 34-gallon rear livewells with independent fill, recirculating and drain modes, and adjustable pump timer and pump-out.  A 28-quart in-floor compartment doubles as storage for gear or as an ice chest.  Additional gear compartments are found under the aft and bow fishing decks, including a removable day box and an integrated rod storage holder.  Storage compartments feature gas-assisted lifts for ease of access.

A digital bow panel includes trolling motor receptacle, lighting, and trim switches.  Auto or manual 1500 GPH bilge pump, interior lighting, standard high performance 12” Jack place with two stern eyes, 15 Amp x 4-bank Minn Kota battery charger with charging inlet and 6-gauge trolling motor wiring system with four battery trays are also standard on both models.  With a dual, 50-gallon fuel tank, combined with Yamaha’s VMAX SHO high performance offerings with unmatched fuel economy, the FX21 and FX20 will get you to your fishing spots on fewer dollars.

Both the FX20 and FX21 come standard with a Humminbird 788 dash-mounted fish finder and 728 bow-mounted fish finder with transducers, temperature probes, GPS antenna and interlink system, and Minn Kota Max 101 foot-operated, 101 lbs. thrust, 36V, 42” shaft trolling motor.  Also standard is an FX touring trailer with tandem axle, disc brakes, spare tire carrier, swing tongue, ratchet tie-downs, aluminum wheels, color coordinated Euro-Step, polymer fenders, custom lighting and torsion axles.

Backed by Skeeter’s High Performance Engineering Concepts, the FX Series features an Aluminum Torque Transfer Transom and Stringer System, adhering high-test aircraft structural aluminum to the Ex-cel transom, thus significantly reducing stress on the transom, deck and sides.  Composite one-piece flooring is composed of PVC cross-linked foam, sandwiched between layers of fiberglass.  The Ex-cel composites used in the transom and stringers add outstanding strength and durability.  Skeeter’s aluminum deck grid provides superior support and strength, with lids that close tightly and lock securely.
The FX Series may be personalized with a host of optional features, including enhanced hull, deck color and graphics packages, dual console, electronics packages from Hummingbird and Lowrance, Yamaha Command Link, live-well aeration system, 12” hydraulic jack-plate, carpet padding, trolling motor options from Minn Kota or Motor Guide, in-floor cooler exchange, 13” fixed fishing seat, bike seat with Power Pro Pole, Hamby keel protector, Sirius-ready, AM-FM stereo with CD player, wired remote control and speakers, boarding ladder, tackle storage system and trailer upgrades.

MSRP: FX21/SHO250 $70,810, FX21/SHO225 $69,460, FX20/SHO250 $69,280, FX20/SHO225 $67,930.

Future Fisherman Foundation Launches “Tournaments for Tomorrow” Program

Monday, November 16th, 2009 by ttnews

The Future Fisherman Foundation (F3) today announced the launch of a new program, Tournaments for Tomorrow, that will provide financial support for youth fishing programs such as the mentor-based Hooked on Fishing Not on Drugs program, the school-based Physh Ed angling and boating education program, and the Boys & Girls Clubs’ C.A.T.C.H. after-school fishing program.

“Since 1986, more than one million children in 50 states have been introduced to fishing, boating and conservation through their participation in these important national programs,” said F3 Executive Director Keith Sutton. “But sustaining these efforts requires hundreds of thousands of dollars each year to provide teacher training, program materials and staff support. It wouldn’t be possible without partners who provide financial assistance, including tournament fishing organizations such as Bass Pro Shops’ Crappie Masters Tournament Trail that have raised thousands of dollars to help fund F3’s vital kids fishing programs. Through their encouragement, we created the new Tournaments for Tomorrow program so tournament groups everywhere have a simple way for their members to make contributions as well. It’s a mutually beneficial arrangement—a win-win deal for the tournament organization, the Foundation, the fishing community and future generations.”

Each organization that enrolls agrees to raise funds by asking tournament participants to contribute an extra $5 to $10 per entry fee, or an amount of their choosing, to support F3 programs. Alternatively, the organization can “pass the hat” (or maybe pass a bait bucket!) at their opening events and ask for contributions. Members can give an amount that’s comfortable for them. And while individual donations may not be much more than the cost of a single fishing lure, some groups have raised hundreds of dollars at a single event, an important contribution that provides fishing experiences and education for dozens of children.

Upon enrollment in the program, the organization will be licensed to use the Future Fisherman Foundation “Proud Partner” logo in their publications and on their website to show their members support efforts to ensure the future of fishing. F3 also will send a special DVD the Tournaments for Tomorrow chairperson can use to show tournament participants and club members how their dollars will help. Each club will receive recognition for their participation in the Foundation newsletter and in the “Partners” section of the F3 website. Additionally, the Foundation will use their blog and Facebook pages to help publicize youth events held in conjunction with each organization’s tournaments.

“We’ve been contacted by dozens of tournament groups throughout the country that want to get involved with the Foundation’s youth outreach programs,” Sutton said. “Becoming part of our Tournaments for Tomorrow initiative is a great way they can show their support and let the world know they have the same mission we do—to provide quality fishing experiences for every child in America. Working together with the thousands of fishing clubs and competitive anglers around the country, we can make this dream a reality.”

For additional information about the Tournaments for Tomorrow program, including a downloadable enrollment form, visit the Future Fisherman Foundation’s website, or contact Keith Sutton at (703) 402-3623 or ksutton@futurefisherman.org.

Obama Proclaims National Hunting and Fishing Day

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009 by ttnews

NATIONAL HUNTING AND FISHING DAY, 2009

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

A PROCLAMATION

From atop Pikes Peak to the shores of the James River, Americans celebrate the great abundance and utility of our natural resources. Since our Nation’s founding, hunters and anglers have cherished these unparalleled natural gifts and marveled at their untamed beauty. National Hunting and Fishing Day recognizes the contributions of millions of Americans who continue to engage in these ageless pursuits.

Following in the centuries-old footsteps of the pioneers who walked before them, hunters and anglers have played a key role in the conservation and restoration of numerous species and their natural habitats. They not only understand their pivotal role as stewards of the land, but also seek to pass on this honored tradition to future generations.

As our citizens continue to enjoy our Nation’s natural resources, we must remember that this privilege brings great responsibility. Not long ago, hunting threatened the extinction of the American Bison, an enduring symbol of the American West. Today, their population has recovered because of the cooperative efforts of conservationists and hunters. Many species, however, still require our protection. We can no longer look to our wilderness, as some once did, as land full of unlimited bounty and surplus. Recognizing the need for conservation, our hunters and anglers have worked hard to manage local ecosystems where wildlife remain, as well as to protect those areas where they are slowly re-establishing viable populations.

Our national character, always evolving, finds its foundation in those timeless American ideals of freedom, fairness, and self-sustainability. Today’s hunters and anglers bring this spirit to life in the forests and streams they visit. If not for America’s great hunters and anglers, like President Theodore Roosevelt and Aldo Leopold, our Nation would not enjoy sound game management; a system of ethical, science-based game laws; and an extensive public lands estate on which to pursue the sports. On National Hunting and Fishing Day, we celebrate their contributions to our natural environment and our national heritage.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim September 26, 2009, as National Hunting and Fishing Day. I call upon the people of the United States to recognize this day with appropriate programs and activities.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-second day of September, in the year of our Lord two thousand nine, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-fourth.

BARACK OBAMA

“Professional Anglers’ Auctions” – PAA

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009 by ttnews

Starting September 4, 2009, the PAA will be hosting “Professional Anglers’ Auctions”. This program is a new twist on the eBay fundraising auctions used by the organization in the past. Each of these auctions will be a fundraiser for a designated charity through the eBay program, “Giving Works”. A portion of the proceeds will also benefit the PAA. Fans of fishing will have an opportunity to bid on once in a lifetime fishing trips, unique fan experiences, along with authentic professional fishing memorabilia.

Each two week auction cycle will have one or two fishing trips or fan experience prizes, which will be scheduled for specific time periods and locations.  In addition, Professional Anglers’ Auctions will also feature one of a kind fishing memorabilia and autographed items, each coming with a Certificate of Authenticity.

According to John Crews, President of the PAA, “This is an extremely unique opportunity for fans of bass fishing. They will be able to get fishing trips, memorabilia, and prizes that they can’t get anywhere else. The PAA is proud to provide this service, and benefit charities at the same time.”

The first round of auctions kicks off with a dream day of fishing on famed Lake Amistad with PAA Pro Byron Velvick.  The winning bidder also receives two nights lodging at the Lake Amistad Resort during the trip.  For an ultimate fan experience, bidders will also have a chance to win a Bass University seminar series of their choice, along with a private dinner for them and a guest with PAA Pro Mike Iaconelli.  In addition to these unique experiences, other pieces of professional fishing memorabilia, including autographed jerseys and baits, will be available for bids as well.

For the first round of auctions, a portion of the proceeds will go to Recycled Fish, a new conservation partner of the PAA. Recycled Fish promotes a lifestyle of stewardship among anglers and those concerned about the nation’s water resources.  Future auctions will also donate a portion of the proceeds to other organizations that support the goals and missions of the PAA.  Complete details of the Professional Angler Auctions will be hosted on www.fishpaa.com.

IFA Redfish and Hobie Cat Start Kayak Only Fishing Tour in 2010

Thursday, August 27th, 2009 by ttnews

The national leader in lucrative and high-level inshore tournaments across the southeastern United States, the IFA Redfish Tour takes inshore tournament fishing to the anglers – allowing them to fish close to home, minimize expenses and cash in on big purses. In keeping with the IFA’s desire to make inshore fishing more exciting, lucrative and accessible, the IFA announces a partnership with Hobie Cat Company, the makers of the industry’s most sought-after fishing kayaks, to form the IFA Kayak Fishing Tour Presented by Hobie Fishing.

An inaugural showcase event of the catch-photograph-and-release format is scheduled for September 20 in Titusville, Florida. Competitors must fish from a non-motorized, self-propelled watercraft. The one-day competition will follow the day after the Redfish Tour’s Florida East Coast Division tournament. An 18-event regular season schedule, plus a Championship for the kayak-only tournaments will begin in 2010.

“The IFA is excited to team with Hobie Fishing in offering a second day of competition,” said Bart Schad of the IFA. “A great number of inshore anglers fish from kayaks and this tournament gives this group a chance to compete in a format custom designed for their tactics.”

The multispecies tournament will include payouts in four Divisions plus a Junior Angler award. The winner of the Aggregate/Slam Division will take home a Hobie Mirage Pro-Angler valued at $2399, with the next seven places awarded cash (based on a 100 boat field). The Redfish, Trout and Flounder Division winners will each win a Hobie Fishing kayak, valued at $1,049 or greater value, with second and third place finishers winning cash.

“We are extremely proud of this new initiative between Hobie Fishing and the IFA,” said Doug Skidmore, President of Hobie Cat Company. “This new tournament and 2010 Tour allow us to show our appreciation for all the saltwater kayak anglers and the exciting fishing they enjoy. Our goal is to reward the dedication of these anglers and to encourage others to join in on the kayak fishing experience.”

PAA Moves 2009 Corporate Cup to Early Summer of 2010

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009 by ttnews

In light of new opportunities and the recent growth of the Professional
Anglers Association, the PAA has decided to reschedule the 2009 Corporate Cup for June 3-5, 2010.  The
event will continue to be hosted by Florence/Lauderdale Tourism on Pickwick Lake in Florence, AL. This
additional time will allow new partnerships to develop and contribute to the overall strength of the
event.

As a result of the new dates, anglers now receive additional practice time prior to the off limits of the
2009 Toyota Texas Bass Classic. The change also allows the PAA to support the membership competing
in the BASS Post Season Championship and the FLW Series events in September. The new time of year
should ensure some impressive catches, and work well within the existing 2010 tournament schedules.
According to John Crews, President of the PAA, “Moving the event makes sense for a lot of reasons. We
are anticipating great participation because of the schedule timing. We are also anticipating great
catches that time of year on Pickwick. I am really pumped about the event!”

PAA Begins Releasing Details of Their 3 Year Event Plan

Saturday, July 18th, 2009 by ttnews

The PAA begins releasing details of their 3 year event plan

The Professional Anglers Association continues to grow and gain momentum, and the details of the three year

event plan solidify their commitment to anglers of all skill levels.  For the upcoming 2010 tournament season, the

PAA will be expanding the trail to include four events with a unique twist.  The new fourth event of the season will

be a no entry fee tournament, with a comparable purse, and the field will consist of the top 100 competitors from

the first three events.  The Toyota Texas Bass Classic, going into its third year, has been a resounding success

thanks to Toyota’s commitment to the PAA and the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department. Based on the success and

the enthusiasms generated from the anglers at the Toyota Texas Bass Classic over the past two years, it has

become evident to the PAA that no entry fee events are key to their success.  This top 100 ranking will be based on

PAA Angler of the Year points at the conclusion of the third tournament of the series.   Like the 2009 Carrot Stix

Tournament Series, the 2010 series will be filmed for television and provide live streaming of the daily weigh-ins to

maximize angler exposure and public interaction.

In addition to the expansion of the 2010 event schedule, details of the plan also include a qualification system for

an additional series of no entry fee PAA All-Star events in 2011.  The All-Star field will be made up of 77 of the most

accomplished anglers in the world, from multiple tournament trails.  Approximately half the field will qualify

through the 2010 PAA Tournament Series, with the remaining competitors being selected from BASS, FLW, and

international competitions.  The top 12, based on Angler of the Year points, from the BASS Elite Series and FLW

Tour will all earn automatic berths into the All-Star Series; as will the overall AOY champions from the Women’s

Bassmaster Tour, BASS Opens, and FLW Series.  In addition to these consistent anglers, another group of

champions will also be invited to participate.  The overall Championship winners from the Bassmaster’s Classic,

FLW Forrest Wood Cup, Stren Series, TBF National Championship, Federation Nation National Championship, BFL

All American, as well as three international competitors will all be invited to the All Star Series to round out the

field.  This unique format will lead to a star studded field, with a mix of legendary anglers and the nation’s hottest

rising stars.

The new four event tournament series, on the schedule for the next three years, and the 2011 All-Star Series,

aren’t all the changes in store for anglers.  The PAA will also be inviting co-anglers to participate in their events,

with a new and exciting format to keep things interesting.  It is important to note that co-anglers are eligible to fish

the first three events of the season; however it will be an observer only format in all no entry fee events as part of

the plan.  According to John Crews, President of the PAA, “Our new three year event plan illustrates the PAA’s

desire to provide as many opportunities to compete as possible, while being conscious of the costs associated with

tournament competition.  In 2010 we will be keeping entry fees the same as this year, while working towards our

goal of high level competitions without entry fees.”

A complete explanation of the Three Year Event Plan, along with more specific details will be made available

on www.fishpaa.com in the coming weeks, as will scheduling, entry procedures, and all other pertinent

information.  Anglers interested in being included in informational releases about the upcoming season should

notify the PAA Offices, either via the web or direct line at 270-527-2030.

4th Annual Chad Morgenthaler Bass Tournament for Special Olympics Illinois

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009 by ttnews

PRO FISHERMAN CHAD MORGENTHALER TEAMS WITH SPECIAL OLYMPICS FOR 4th ANNUAL BASS TOURNAMENT

Rend Lake Tournament to Benefit Athletes in Illinois

Professional bass fisherman Chad Morgenthaler of Coulterville, Ill., is hooked on Special Olympics. He is teaming up with Special Olympics Illinois and the Law Enforcement Torch Run to host the 4th Annual Chad Morgenthaler Bass Tournament presented by Jasper Engines & Transmissions on Aug. 29 at Rend Lake in southern Illinois.

The tournament is a buddy team format, with a Beat the Pro fishing contest and chances to win great prizes. Morgenthaler and other Professional Anglers Association (PAA) pros will participate.

The fishing tournament is limited to the first 150 boats to register. Entry is $175 per boat if registered by 5 p.m. Aug. 21 which includes entry into the Big Bass pot. Entry fee is $200 per boat for those who register after 5 p.m. Aug. 21. Each angler receives a T-shirt and goodie bag full of tackle. The first three years of the tournament raised more than $77,000 for Special Olympics Illinois.

PAA anglers, tournament sponsors, auction items and two-person teams are still needed for the tournament. Donations and auction items may be sent in care of:

Jeff Henson

Special Olympics Illinois

605 E. Willow St.

Normal, IL 61761

Anglers and companies interested in getting involved in the tournament may contact Henson at 800-394-0562 or email him at jhenson@soill.org.

Registration for the tournament is from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, at Rend Lake Resort, the official housing site for the tournament. A pre-tournament meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at the resort. The meeting includes dinner, an auction of great fishing items and a meet and greet with the pro anglers. Rend Lake Sailboat Harbor is the launch site for the tournament.

For entry forms or more information, contact Jeff Henson at Special Olympics Illinois at 800-394-0562, email him at jhenson@soill.org or visit www.soill.org to download a form.

Morgenthaler is a three-time Bassmaster Classic qualifier and has several FLW Top 10 tournament finishes. He became involved with Special Olympics Illinois in 2005 when he donated a day-long fishing trip as part of an online auction sponsored by the organization. Special Olympics athletes were on hand at Crab Orchard Lake in southern Illinois to see Morgenthaler and the auction winner begin their fishing trip. That experience led to Morgenthaler’s interest in hosting a charity tournament for the organization.

“I was inspired by the courage and enthusiasm shown by the Special Olympics athletes,” said Morgenthaler. “After talking more with Special Olympics Illinois, we agreed a fishing tournament would be an exciting way to introduce the organization and its athletes to a previously untapped audience of fishermen.”

Chad Morgenthaler, 42, has been a professional bass fisherman since 2002. He is sponsored by Jasper Engines & Transmissions, Phoenix Boats, Yamaha Motors, Lunker Lure – Hawg Caller, Svanda GM Motor Group, Solar Bat, Power-Pole, Nameoki Village Marine, Abu Garcia, Trilene, Plano Tackle, Minn Kota, Element 21 Fishing, Optima Batteries and Professional Anglers Association.

Special Olympics Illinois is a not-for-profit organization offering year-round training and competition in 19 sports for more than 22,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics programs enhance physical fitness, motor skills, self-confidence, social skills and encourage family support.

The Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run is the single largest year-round fund-raising event benefiting Special Olympics Illinois. The intrastate relay and its various fundraising projects have two goals: to raise money and increase public awareness for the athletes of Special Olympics. Each year, more than 3,000 officers in Illinois run more than 1,500 miles carrying the Flame of Hope through the streets of their hometowns and deliver it to the State Summer Games in Normal in June.

IFA Redfish Tournament Results – Englewood, FLA

TEAM LOOPER/WALTERS WINS IFA REDFISH EVENT AT ENGLEWOOD, FLA.
Duo takes home new Ranger boat, big points boost in IFA Florida West Division

LIZELLA, Ga. (June 29, 2009) – Bob Looper and Rick Walters, both a Brooksville, Fla., caught a two-redfish limit that weighed 13.23 pounds to win the 2009 IFA Redfish Tour event at Englewood, Fla., on June 27. To win the one-day event, which launched out of Stump Pass Marina, Looper and Walters bested a field of other two-angler teams to win the event, adding 200 points to their IFA Florida West Coast Division point total.

The pair ran its Ranger boat approximately 40 miles south of the takeoff on Saturday en route to their second IFA Redfish Tour win in as many seasons (2008 Sarasota event). Targeting redfish with Gulp! Jerk Shads, the pair boated 10 fish on the day, including a 6.64-pound kicker, which anchored their winning weight.

“We worked the baits really slow in deep waters and it was the trick today,” Looper said of the team’s methodical approach to the tournament.

With the win, the pair won a 2009 Ranger Banshee Extreme valued at more than $30,000. The boat is powered by a 60-horsepower, four-stroke Yamaha outboard and is equipped with a Bob’s four-inch Ultra Light Jackplate, Power-Pole shallow water anchor, Minn Kota trolling motor, Humminbird electronics, Blue Point Fabrication metal work and Loadmaster trailer.

As the tournament’s winners and the highest-finishing Ranger Cup participants, Looper and Walters also won the $2,000 Ranger Cup award for competing from their Ranger boat.

The second-place team of Mike Tindal of Mobile, Ala., and Artie Price Jr. of Port Richey, Fla., brought 12.17 pounds to the scales on Saturday, buoyed by a 6.11-pound kicker redfish. The team, which already has a first-place finish to its credit this season after winning the Bay St. Louis event last month, ran 25 miles in its Ranger boat, targeting hard-to-catch redfish with Gulp! baits.

“Artie and I have a lot of experience catching spooky redfish and they were spooky here,” Tindal said. “You just have to take your time and be patient and that’s what we did.”

The third-place team of Greg Devault of Port Richey, Fla., and Jon Turner of Myakka City, Fla., weighed in a two-fish limit that tipped the scales at 12.12 pounds. Using jerk baits to sight fish for cruising reds, the team reported catching around 40 fish in two separate locations identified during practice.

“Once you’ve made up your mind that you’re going to sight fish all day,” Devault said, “you’ve got to have your Power-Pole shallow-water anchor to keep you from blowing off of spots and a good pair of polarized sunglasses. I couldn’t see a thing out there without my Solar Bats.”

The 13th-place team of Tony Katsaralas and Dave Turgeon pocketed the $100 Solar Bat Prize for being the highest-finishing team competing while wearing the popular sunglasses. Ray Trudeau and Clinton Lacinak brought one redfish to the scales on their way to finishing 27th, but the 6.86-pound catch was the largest of the tournament, winning the $1,500 Rapala Big Fish Award for the team.

The IFA Redfish Tour continues to draw redfish anglers from Texas to the Carolinas and beyond, offering two-angler teams the opportunity to compete in six different divisions, each offering a three-event regular season. With low entry fees for the one-day, regular-season tournaments allow anglers to fish close to home and minimize expenses, while still being a part of a premier inshore, catch-and-release redfish tournament organization. Teams fishing any three of the IFA’s 18 regular-season events are automatically qualified for a no-entry-fee championship event, pitting qualifiers from each of the six divisions for a combined $77,000 in payouts and prize packages, as well as a shot at the coveted Cabela’s Overall Divisional Team of the Year Award for the six regular-season division winners.

Added this year as an incentive for the very active anglers capitalizing on the opportunities to fish close to home for big money and valuable prizes, teams fishing at least six tournaments in any combination of divisions are automatically eligible to compete for the IFA Redfish Tour “Ultra 6” award. The award consists of a $5,000 cash prize, presented to the highest-finishing eligible team at the IFA Redfish Tour championship tournament.

This year, in addition to $47,000 in payouts per event (based on a 100-boat field), the first-place prize package for all 18 IFA Redfish Tour regular-season events has been increased. In 2009, every regular-season tournament winner is guaranteed – regardless of field size – a fully loaded 2009 Ranger Banshee Extreme. The entire first-place prize package is valued at $30,000.

For more information on the IFA Redfish Tour, to become a member of the IFA or to become a part of the fastest-growing inshore fishing tournament series in the United States, go online to redfishtour.com.

Central Pro AM Join the PAA as the First PAA Affiliated Trail

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009 by ttnews

The Professional Anglers Association has joined forces with the Central Pro Am Association to offer a
one of a kind opportunity for anglers fishing Central Pro Am in 2010.  The new affiliation brings together
two organizations with a unifying theme of tournament bass fishing, and support of the membership,
the fishermen.  According to John Crews, President of the PAA, “We are excited to implement
partnerships such as this, as we feel it gives strength to both organizations, and as a result creates more
opportunities for the anglers, which is important to the PAA.”
The partnership paves the way for the 2010 Central Pro Am Angler of the Year, along with the Co-angler
of the Year, who will each receive a guaranteed slot in the 2011 PAA Tournament Series.  In addition to
covering entry fees for the anglers, Central Pro Am will also be providing assistance with expenses,
making this a truly inexpensive shot at becoming a touring pro in 2011.  “This could make a couple of
our Central Pro Am’s anglers lifelong dreams come true, just by fishing a season with us…two of our
anglers will be competing against some of the best talent in the country in 2011,” said Jim Thompson,
owner of Central Pro Am.
Two lucky Central Pro Am Anglers also have a chance to compete with touring PAA pros in the 2009 PAA
Corporate Cup, to be held September 10-12 on Lake Pickwick in Florence, AL.  This unique opportunity is
part of a joint PAA/CPAA membership drive.  All members of Central Pro Am in good standing that join
the PAA between June 1 and July 31, 2009 are registered for their chance to win this all expense paid
trip courtesy of Central Pro Am.

Berkley Big Bass Challenge – California Delta

Friday, May 29th, 2009 by ttnews

Berkley is proud to announce the upcoming Berkley Big Bass Challenge to be held June 6-7 on California’s Delta Lake. The hourly weigh-in format allows any registered angler to bring one fish to the scale each hour to compete for one of seven hourly checks, plus a shot at driving home a new 2009 Toyota Tundra Double Cab truck with a retail value of over $25,000.  The first 150 anglers to register will be in a special raffle on Sunday to win a day on the water with 2009 Bassmaster Classic Champion Skeet Reese.

The amateur-friendly event focuses on the big fish, but strategy plays a key role when determining when to bring a fish to the scales.  Anglers can choose the best time to weigh in their best fish to increase their odds at scoring a nice check. Top tier tournament anglers on the BASS and FLW tournament trails cannot compete. Over $16,000 in prize money is on the table for anglers using Berkley baits to catch their fish along with the Toyota truck that is guaranteed to be awarded regardless the size of the field.

“While everyone always thinks of big fish and large sacks, the format for this tournament makes it easy for amateurs and novices to win some cash”, said Andrew Marks, Sr. Marketing Manager for Berkley.  “The hourly weigh-in makes for some interesting strategy as to when to weigh in your fish and the largest fish one hour may have placed 3rd or 4th in another.  It definitely adds for some fun and exciting times when anglers literally have cashed checks with bass weighing less than 2 pounds”.

The Berkley Experience Trailer will also make an appearance at Russo’s Marina throughout the weekend starting at 3:00 P.M. on Friday, June 5th.  The Berkley staff will be on hand to help all anglers with knot tying skills along with the product demonstrations, interactive screens, Wii Fishing game and other fun elements.  Berkley baits will also be on sale under the tent with special promotions available on certain Pure Fishing products.

Registration is now open and anglers will also be able to register at the event starting at 3:00 p.m. June 5th. Registration and Details about the Berkley Big Bass Challenge can be found at www.anglerspress.net
