Ice Fishing Lures Resonates with Sonar

Friday, October 2nd, 2009 by ttnews
No single tool has been more instrumental in creating a new generation of highly skilled ice anglers than the portable flasher-sonar unit. Ice fishing with a flasher remains the ultimate in visual, hands-on fishing. You see the depth along with the lake bottom; you see your lure in context; and eventually, you see the fish as they respond to your presentation— like a sight-fishing video game.

Like any pursuit, however, advancing the skill level of ice fishing’s practitioners requires new technologies—better tools for improving efficiency in the field.  Thanks to industry-leading sonar engineers, such a technology has emerged.
Last winter, a core group of ice insiders were chosen to quietly test the final versions of a truly unique new category of ice lure. The results were groundbreaking. The concept— a true first for the fishing industry— is a lure specifically engineered to be fished in tandem with a sonar unit; a “sonar-friendly” ice fishing jig that bounces back a solid, well-defined signal to the transducer.
Fittingly, as it turned out, the concept for the new Northland Fishing Tackle Hexi Fly had long resided within the minds of two of North America’s brightest sonar designers. Duane Cummings and Ray Marzean, military trained engineers who developed flasher-sonar products for MarCum Technologies, began cultivating their lure idea over three years ago.
“When engineers designed the first concave satellite dishes,” explains Cummings, “They drew on the precepts of antenna theory to build a reflective surface that most efficiently gathered electromagnetic waves. Essentially, we used these same concepts while engineering the Hexi Fly.

“Using a design model called Quarter Wave Technology, we knew that to get maximum target return from a small ice jig, we’d need to give it a reflective surface that matched the transmit frequency of most flasher-sonar units. Anglers who used the Hexi Fly last winter immediately noticed its flat, slightly concave body, which resembled a satellite dish. This was, of course, no accident. We created the lure with a reflective surface and shape that sonar really likes—it actually pings the transducer with twice the signal strength of similar sized jigs.”

Benefits for the angler, MarCum engineer Cummings reports, include the ability to maximize flasher performance on ice, or other vertical fishing situations. “Because this jig bounces back such a strong return signal, you’re able to tune down the gain on a unit like a MarCum LX-5 and still clearly read the bait,” he says. “A reduced gain setting yields better target separation, improved IR (interference rejection) performance, and the ability to filter out dense vegetation or other cover without losing sight of your jig within a cluster of signals.

Beyond its practical applications with sonar, however, the most important question remained: What do the fish think?

“The special body shape of the Hexi Fly also yielded an appealing swimming action,” Cummings adds. “It really flutters on the fall, and wobbles and glides off to the side of the hole when it’s jigged. And when you dress it with a small softbait, and give it tiny rodtip quivers, it’s got this sweet-looking cam-rocking action. It’s a remarkable combination in a lure—something quite unique in the fishing world. Used with a well-tuned sonar-unit, like the MarCum LX-5, I think fishermen are going to like what they see.”

MotorGuide VariMAX Kayak

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009 by ttnews

MotorGuide’s new VariMAX Digital Kayak trolling motors offer the finest in electric trolling motor performance in salt and fresh water, giving all small boat anglers better control and longer run times than have previously been available.

This special model V45 is a 12-volt, 45-pound thrust motor. Its VariMAX technology allows precise digital variable speed control with 3.5X more run time from a single battery charge than the common 5-speed transom-mounted trolling motors. A built-in BluVis multi-functional gauge indicates the speed level setting and the battery’s charge status at a glance for quick reference throughout a day on the water.

VariMAX Kayak features a 20-inch stainless steel shaft for the perfect amount of trolling motor bite and clearance, making it ideal for mounting on the bow or transom of any small boat. For bow operation, the motor’s head can be easily reversed to pull the boat for the ultimate in front-of-the-boat control.

What really sets VariMAX apart from other small craft trolling motors is its variable speed versatility. Variable speed means there is a full range of infinite settings from low to high so the angler has total control in finding the perfect speed setting for the conditions at hand. Speed adjustments are made by simply twisting the motor’s handle right to increase and left to decrease. The direction of thrust is just as intuitive in operation, pushing the handle forward to go forward, and pulling it back for reverse.

The trolling motor’s construction is durable, stylish and functional. The VariMAX Kayak model is built on MotorGuide’s proven 3.5-inch lower unit and features the brand’s legendary Great White corrosion protection for saltwater use, meaning this motor can also endure any freshwater fishing application.

The VariMAX Kayak model retails for under $300, and is available through traditional sporting goods stores and marine dealers. For more information, visit MotorGuide.com

Crappie Fishing Catching On – Underwater Dock Lights

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009 by ttnews

Crappie anglers have long been known for their nighttime prowess, and crappie fishing is becoming more popular with the increased demand of underwater dock lights.

“We continue to see tremendous sales of our underwater dock lights from customers who fish for crappie, as these fish can be found in just about every freshwater lake in the lower 48 states,” says Brad Ball, President of Deep Glow Technologies, Inc., manufacturer of Deep Glow underwater dock lighting systems.

In fact, Deep Glow products were originally developed for saltwater and coastal homeowners, yet the company’s now sells approximately half of its lights to freshwater customers.

Crappie fishing usually equals family fun, and these fish are often considered one of the best tasting freshwater fish, targeted by anglers because of the diversity in how you can catch crappie.  They are also more plentiful than other freshwater species, with anglers capable of hauling in dozens of fish in a short time period

“Waterfront homeowners love crappie fishing from their docks using our underwater dock lights because these lights are easy to install by simply plugging the ballast into a 110 GFCI outlet, and dropping the light into the water,” says Ball.  “Our Deep Glow lights can be dropped under the dock’s pilings, or can easily be situated next to underwater structure, such as brush, rocks or timber – places where crappie with school,” says Ball.

With a Deep Glow light, you’ll build an instant marine ecosystem, as Deep Glow’s lights attract baitfish, which then attracts other larger species like crappie.

Crappie spread out to find brushy or weedy structure, seeking baitfish to feed off of, and are often attracted to light.  The fish will school around an underwater light, searching the glowing waters for wounded prey or the smell of food.

As Deep Glow lights may be dropped or placed in the water at a depth of 3-20 feet, they are great for fishing suspended fish.  Deep Glow lights are 60% brighter than its competitors, and depending on water clarity, can illuminate a diameter of up to 30 feet.

Deep Glow lights were designed to withstand harsh underwater environments, including rough water, salt water, prop wash, wave action, and impact from cast nets.  The low profile design allows the light to settle on the seabed to avoid damage from motor skegs and fishing lines.

A patent-pending design, featuring a metal halide bulb encased in a tri-level custom injection molded and waterproof housing, was years in development.  Each light produces heat to combat marine growth, and go through a self-cleaning process.  The lights can be easily pulled out of the water for additional cleaning, and the replaceable bulb is guaranteed for one year.

ProControll brings foot-steer convenience to hand operated trolling motors

Saturday, August 1st, 2009 by ttnews

Traditional hand operated transom-style trolling motors can now be foot controlled, regardless of whether the motor is mounted on the boat’s transom, bow or side … thanks to an ingenious and affordable new aftermarket product called ProControll.

ProControll is a foot-steering system, patent-pending design made to work with 12-volt trolling motors of any kind and thrust that have a shaft-locking feature. The system consists of an innovative clamp mount and precision-engineered foot pedal that, together, turn a transom mount trolling motor into a foot-steered model with selectable continuous-run or momentary on/off operation.

Costing little more than $100 and easy to install, ProControll provides the same kind of hands-free advantages that come with the much more expensive bow mount foot-controlled trolling motors.

“I grew up fishing in Kansas on a limited budget and with a boat having a trolling motor on the back,” explained ProControll inventor Richard Mynster. “From my own experiences, I knew firsthand the frustrating compromises of trying to fish and operate a trolling motor at the same time. ProControll is the result of those experiences and my inherited mechanical inclinations.”

Mynster and other officials at RM Industries, a Kansas City, Kansas, design and development firm specializing in the introduction of marine products, say ProControll meets all their original objectives.

“We wanted this product to be quality built, made in the United States and affordable to every angler who owns a trolling motor, regardless of his or her level of fishing skill and participation,” said president Michael Rhodes. “Based on the responses we got from trolling motor manufacturers, sporting goods buyers and anglers during our recent debut at ICAST, our design homework and efforts seem to have been right on target. We couldn’t have asked for a better reception to ProControll than what we received.”

The ProControll mount and foot pedal are made of rustproof, virtually indestructible fiberglass reinforced nylon for strength, durability and long life in harsh marine environments. The mount’s pivot shaft is machined from 17-4 precipitation hardened stainless steel; its stainless steel bearings are hermetically sealed for further protection from the elements. Weight of the mount and pedal combined is less than 9 pounds.

The ProControll foot pedal brings a modern look and design to the traditional style foot-control steering device that operates with a heel-to-toe rocker motion. Steering is achieved through a pull-pull dual cable system, the easiest to operate and most reliable of all mechanical-steer systems. Cables are plastic lined, 5mm coated steel for the ultimate in strength and smooth operation. The design allows trolling motor steering adjustments of up to 180 degrees.

The real beauty of ProControll is that its mount and foot pedal are a self-contained steering system that work independently of the trolling motor; that’s why it can work with any transom model having a friction lock, so the shaft can be snugged in place and kept from turning in its own bracket. ProControl’s pivotal mounting block is what turns the fixed-position motor when the user works the foot pedal, applying toe pressure to steer to the right and heel pressure to go left.

Foot-Steer AND Hand-Steer

Aside from the obvious benefit of freeing up anglers’ hands for fishing, ProControll has many other advantages. The ProControll mount fits anywhere on a boat where its screw clamps can be secured, meaning it can often be affixed to a boat’s transom, side or bow.

A big plus is for anglers who like to put their transom motors on the boat’s bow so that it pulls instead of pushes. The ProControll design means the motor’s head doesn’t have to be reversed for this application as normally required; the motor can be simply positioned in its own bracket to run forward and then mounted to ProControll on the front of the boat for pedal steering, just like with a regular bow mount foot-controlled trolling motor.

However, a huge advantage of ProControll over the built-in foot-controlled cable systems is that it allows normal hand steering of the trolling motor at any time as desired. This can be especially effective when maneuvering in and out of tight areas such as stump fields, or in the unlikely event a cable should become inoperable.

In fact, hand controlled steering is recommended when the motor is being operated at high thrust settings above normal fishing operation, such as when using the trolling motor to move from one spot to the next, because of torque at high speeds. Normal fishing operation is in the 10- to 30-pound thrust range.

Installation Takes Only Minutes

The ProControll installation process is simple, first requiring the system’s universal mount be secured to the desired location on the boat using the built-in screw clamps fitted with oversized and easy-to-grip knobs. Once that’s in place, the transom motor is then affixed to the system’s pivoting mounting block just as it would be fastened to the boat’s transom.

For the wiring procedure, the trolling motor’s positive wire needs to be cut about four inches away from the battery fitting, saving the loose end for later use. A provided ProControll electrical male connection is crimped onto the end of the positive wire just cut.

The ProControll has two positive wires and one negative wire aesthetically enclosed alongside the cables coming from the foot pedal in a rubber shield. The positive wire with the battery terminal connection goes to the trolling motor battery’s positive terminal; the negative wire hooks to the battery’s negative post. The pedal’s other positive wire plugs into the modified power cable from the trolling motor. The trolling motor’s negative wire goes to the battery’s negative terminal. A high amperage relay provides the protective electrical communication link between the ProControll system and the trolling motor.

To hook up the steering capabilities, the foot pedal needs to be “rocked” into a level attitude. Then the trolling motor is positioned to run straight with the centerline of the boat. With that done, all steering functions are now controlled from the ProControll foot pedal. The pedal has a heel stop for easy no-look foot positioning.

ProControll’s highly flexible braided cable allows the foot pedal to be moved in the boat as desired up to its maximum length of seven feet. The trolling motor’s speed settings remain adjustable at the motor, but on/off functions are now controlled at the foot pedal. A three-position marine grade slide switch is recessed out of the way on the pedal’s right side for selection of: off, continuous on and momentary contact operation. In the momentary setting, the user can turn the motor on by holding foot pressure on a micro switch located on top of the foot pedal, and turn it off by releasing the pressure.

Of course, even after adaptation to the ProControll system, the transom motor can still be used as it was before conversion. During the installation process, the user just needs to crimp a provided electrical female connection to the battery fitting section that was cut from the motor’s power cord, allowing it to be easily reattached and used in its original form.

ProControll On The Water Soon

“We fish, too, and therefore have tried to think of all variables that anglers encounter while fishing from a boat equipped with a trolling motor,” added Mynster. “We believe we’ve done that with ProControll, while keeping form and function as simple as possible.”

“This product is definitely fisherman friendly,” said Rhodes. “We’re also confident that anglers will like the other products we’re working on right now at RM Industries, too.”

ProControll will be available this fall through fishing tackle and marine retail stores and will sell for around $110

Product Safety Recall: Garmin® BlueChart g2 and g2 Vision v2009

Thursday, June 11th, 2009 by ttnews

Garmin Ltd. , the global leader in satellite navigation, announced today that the company is conducting a voluntary product safety recall of the 2009 version of its marine cartography data card known as BlueChart® g2 and g2 Vision.  The affected data cards have been sold between April 8, 2009 and June 3, 2009.

In certain waters, the data card provides inaccurate indications of the depth of the water.   This creates a risk of boats going aground, which could result in damage to the boat and/or personal injury.

While Garmin has only received reports of data cards giving inaccurate depth indications in the waters along the coast of Sweden and Denmark, out of an abundance of caution, Garmin has voluntarily chosen to globally recall all 2009 versions of the BlueChart g2 and g2 Vision cards.  Garmin has notified relevant authorities about this issue and is working closely with them.  No other products are affected by this recall.

Affected products are the 2009 version of the BlueChart g2 in Garmin proprietary card format, BlueChart g2 in microSD/SD card format and BlueChart g2 Vision in microSD/SD card format.  Customers are being advised not to use these data cards for navigation.

Affected customers will be provided with a free replacement BlueChart or BlueChart g2 Vision v2008.5.  When the 2009 version has been corrected Garmin intends to make it available free of charge to those customers.  For more information on the recall and to determine if their cards are affected and eligible for a free replacement, go to www.garmin.com/bluechartrecall.

Paradox Marine Nav-Tracker 2.0 With SmartKEY

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009 by ttnews

Boat security systems supplier Paradox Marine has enhanced its Nav-Tracker 2.0 wireless boat location and GPS tracking system with SmartKEY, which automatically disarms the system when the vessel operator boards the vessel and re-arms it when the operator disembarks.

SmartKEY uses RFID technology that allows for ‘no touch’ arming and disarming of the Nav-Tracker 2.0 system. There are no buttons to push or keys to turn. With a SmartKEY in range, Nav-Tracker 2.0 is disarmed. When a SmartKEY is out of range for more than 60 seconds or is turned off, the system will re-arm itself. Nav-Tracker notifies the owner by text message upon arrival at the boat that the system is disarmed and again 60 seconds after departure that the system is armed.

The Nav-Tracker 2.0 SmartKEY is comprised of a state-of-the-art wireless 2.4GHz Active RFID technology with a transmitter paired with a receiver packaged inside of the Nav-Tracker 2.0 control unit operating on a proprietary frequency. The SmartKEY transmits 10 data packs per second when turned on. When it is in range of the Nav-Tracker 2.0, the SmartKEY disarms the system, and it will remain disarmed until it stops receiving the data packets for more than 60 seconds. This provides an extremely high level of security by automatically arming and disarming the system when the operator arrives or leaves the vessel – there’s no more need to remember to arm or disarm the Nav-Tracker 2.0.

SmartKEY also allows the Nav-Tracker 2.0 main control unit to be installed where it is out of sight and inaccessible, making it difficult for intruders to find and disable it.

Olympus Stylus Tough: There’s really only one word to describe the new shockproof, waterproof, freezeproof, crushproof and shakeproof cameras from Olympus: Tough! Built to withstand some of the harshest environments on earth, the Stylus Tough series builds on the impressive specifications of the renowned Stylus SW Series by adding Dual Image Stabilization. Now, when the STYLUS TOUGH-8000 and STYLUS TOUGH-6000 arrive at the windy mountain peak or dive into choppy waves, they stay steady and ready to capture blur-free images in virtually any condition.

“Olympus designed the new Stylus Tough series to go places other point-and-shoot cameras wouldn’t dare to go, and by adding Dual Image Stabilization we ensure that adventurers will come home with crisp, clear images of their travels,” said Nadine Clark, product manager, Olympus Imaging America Inc. “After all, when you make cameras that can be dropped, submerged and frozen you expect the terrain where you use them to get a little rocky along the way, and you want stability as well as durability.”

The STYLUS TOUGH-8000, designed for active and adventurous people, features an impressive 12 million pixels of image resolution for poster-sized prints and can survive a 6.6-foot drop, venture 33 feet underwater, withstand 220 pounds of crushing pressure, and laugh at freezing temperatures. The 10-megapixel STYLUS TOUGH-6000 is made for life’s everyday adventures – especially those with kids. From the kitchen to a waterslide park and the bunny slopes, the STYLUS TOUGH-6000 can take a drop from 5 feet, dive to 10 feet below the surface, and beat the freezing cold. Both Stylus Tough series cameras feature Tap Control to make it easy for skiers, divers and snowmen makers to control key settings without removing their gloves. It can also just be fun for those who enjoy new modern technology.

Winning the Battle of the Blur with Dual Image Stabilization
For the first time, Dual Image Stabilization will be offered on Olympus’ cameras in the tough category. In the cold climates where the Olympus STYLUS TOUGH-8000 and STYLUS TOUGH-6000 thrive, you may shiver, but the cameras perform sure and steady even in shaking hands. Dual Image Stabilization combines two technologies – mechanical Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization and Digital Image Stabilization – to provide one powerful anti-blur solution for capturing great images whether the photographer or the subject is moving. Olympus’ mechanical Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization keeps images sharp by adjusting the internal image sensor to compensate for camera movement, even in low-light conditions when shutter speeds are slower. Additionally, Digital Image Stabilization freezes the action with high ISO sensitivity and fast shutter speeds that prevent blurry images often caused by a moving subject.

Nothing Can Shock These Tough Cameras
Afraid the mountain wind might sweep a camera out of your hands and dash it on the rocks below? Never fear, the STYLUS TOUGH-6000, available in trendy yellow, white or blue tones, can withstand a 5-foot drop thanks to the Stylus Tough series’ shock-absorbing technology, which minimizes the impact on the lens and circuitry. The STYLUS TOUGH-8000, available in stylish blue, black or silver, can withstand a 6.6-foot drop and features a crushproof body that can withstand up to 220 pounds of pressure.

Point-Dunk-and-Shoot Cameras
Stylus Tough series cameras perform as well underwater as they do on land because their lightweight, stainless steel and aluminum exteriors are matched with interior rubber gaskets and O-rings to seal out the elements. The STYLUS TOUGH-8000 can be fully submerged to capture beautiful images down to 33 feet (10 meters) underwater, and features a built-in manometer, making it ideal for more serious underwater adventurers who want to know the depth of where their images were taken. The STYLUS TOUGH-6000 can be submerged up to 10 feet underwater. The inclusion of four preset underwater scene modes makes these cameras perfect for taking photos while scuba diving, snorkeling or simply having worry-free fun in the pool. Additionally, movies can be captured on both cameras and colors are more vibrant using the underwater movie mode on the STYLUS TOUGH-8000. The cameras also feature a water-repellant lens coating to prevent water droplets from forming on the lens to get crystal-clear shots no matter how wet the shooting environment.

Freezeproof for Arctic Adventures
Whether you’re in the arctic tundra or building a snowman in your backyard, the STYLUS TOUGH-8000 and STYLUS TOUGH-6000 cameras still perform when the temperature dips well below freezing (14 degrees Fahrenheit; -10 degrees Celsius). Stylus Tough series cameras continue to allow you to take great images in freezing situations where most traditional cameras would fail.

Olympus Recommended Button
The new “OR” button makes it easy to activate Olympus’ unique features, including In-Camera Panorama, Shadow Adjustment and Perfect Shot Preview. Simply press the new OR button to easily access these commonly used features.

New Beauty Mode: Supermodels Watch out!
Taking beautiful portraits in the pool or on the slopes is easy with the new Beauty Mode. It enables you to soften shadows and smooth wrinkles or blemishes on your subject’s face – all in the camera and as you capture the image! Additionally, subtle edits can be made post-capture using the Beauty Fix mode. Choose “Clear Skin” to smooth a person’s complexion, “Dramatic Eye” to slightly emphasize the eyes, and “Sparkle Eye” to brighten and enhance the contrast of the iris and pupils. You can also apply all three edits at once. Have fun customizing your brilliant images without a PC and costly image editing software.

Hit Them with Your Best Shot: Tap Control
The Stylus Tough series cameras can be controlled with a simple tap on their top, back or sides, which is made possible thanks to their internal 3D accelerometer that detects the direction of the force on the camera’s body. To turn on the flash or Shadow Adjustment Technology, all that is required is a couple of taps on the camera’s sides and top. In adverse climates Tap Control ensures fast adjustment of settings even if you are fighting frostbite wearing large gloves that make pressing traditional buttons nearly impossible.

Wide-Angle Optical Zoom Captures it All
The STYLUS TOUGH-8000 and STYLUS TOUGH-6000 feature a 3.6x wide-angle optical zoom (28-102mm equivalent in 35mm photography, f3.5-5.0) so that even more of the subject makes it into each shot – perfect for underwater photography. The lens does not protrude from its body so it is further protected from harsh conditions.

Versatile Memory
All Olympus digital point-and-shoot cameras accept xD-Picture CardTM media. Starting with products available in August 2008, they also accept microSD memory cards to capture images. The new Stylus Tough cameras offer the flexibility to use either xD-Picture Card or microSD memory cards, which is just one more advantage of Olympus point-and-shoot cameras.

Advanced HyperCrystalTM III LCD
The next generation of Olympus’ LCD technology – HyperCrystal III – displays twice as bright as previous versions so that you can see the details more clearly, even in direct sunlight. The new technology is offered on the STYLUS TOUGH-8000 and STYLUS TOUGH-6000 in a 2.7-inch LCD.

Can’t Hide with Face Detection!
Portrait and group shots make family reunions live beyond the short event, and with Face Detection you’ll capture even the shyest relatives. The STYLUS TOUGH-8000 detects up to three faces and the STYLUS TOUGH-6000 detects up to 16 faces within the frame and automatically focuses and optimizes exposure to capture sharp, brilliant portraits and group shots. Thanks to the unrivaled durability of the Stylus Tough series cameras, you’ll capture amazing photos even if your next family reunion is at a National Park, a water park or a ski slope!

Intelligent Auto Thinks for You
Skating at night? You won’t be the last one on the ice thanks to Intelligent Auto Mode. It automatically identifies what you are shooting (i.e. Portrait, Night + Portrait, Landscape, Macro and Sports) and adjusts the camera’s settings to capture the best quality results. First-time users can jump into this quick and hassle-free feature that does the thinking for them and produces incredible images.

Broaden Your Horizons with In-Camera Panorama
The places you can take Stylus Tough series cameras – the Grand Canyon or the volcanic sand beaches of Hawaii – are locations where you want to capture as much of the scene as you can. In-Camera Panorama mode makes it possible by capturing three images and stitching them together to create one amazing panoramic picture. Simply press the shutter button and slowly pan across a panoramic scene. The second and third images will be captured automatically and stitched together with the first image – resulting in one seamless panorama-size picture. To create the ultimate panoramic picture, consumers can use the OLYMPUS Master Software™ 2 to stitch up to 10 images together.

Shadow Adjustment Technology
Shooting outdoors in bright daylight can be tricky because of the extreme contrast between dark shadowed areas and bright sunlit areas. While the human eye is capable of detecting the nuances between dark and light and all the details in between, image sensors traditionally have not been quite as sensitive. The Stylus Tough series addresses this challenge head-on with Shadow Adjustment Technology, which compensates for extreme contrast where the shadow areas are underexposed and lack visible detail. With this technology, users can preview and capture images with the same contrast as the naked eye.

Perfect Shot Preview
The Stylus Tough series features a Perfect Shot Preview mode that enables users to preview and select various photographic effects on a live, multi-window screen before snapping the shot. Perfect Shot Preview enables users to see precisely what the image will look like when adjustments are made, ensuring users are capturing the exact image they want. It is an ideal way for novice users to learn about the effects of different photography techniques, such as zoom, exposure compensation, white balance and metering.

Perfect Fix In-Camera Editing
The Stylus Tough series offers Red-Eye Fix and Shadow Adjustment Edit, in-camera editing features such as resizing, and saturation adjustments, enabling users to edit photos right in the camera. With the Perfect Fix function, multiple editing features can be applied at once.

LED Illuminator
An LED Illuminator on the Stylus Tough series cameras works like a mini-flashlight on the front of the camera to enhance focus and exposure for macro shooting – great for underwater close-ups where light is scarce. The LED also works in conjunction with Bright Capture to help illuminate your subject when taking low-light portraits.

TruePic™ III Image Processor
Olympus’ enhanced TruePic III Image Processor produces crystal-clear photos using all the pixel information for each image to deliver superior picture quality with more accurate colors, true-to-life flesh tones and faster processing speeds. TruePic III captures sharp images at high ISO settings, minimizing image noise or grainy photos traditionally associated with shooting with high ISO.

Smart Charging for Active Lifestyles
For the first time, the new STYLUS TOUGH-8000 offers internal charging. Using an AC adapter, the camera plugs directly into a power outlet and charges the battery like a traditional mobile phone. It minimizes the need to open the battery compartment door, and helps to maintain the watertight gaskets that keep your camera tough.

Fashionable and Practical Accessories
Olympus offers a number of optional accessories, specifically designed for the Stylus Tough series cameras. For users looking to capture their underwater adventures deeper than 33 feet (10 meters), Olympus offers the PT-045 underwater housing for the STYLUS TOUGH-8000, which enables users to take pictures as deep as 130 feet (40 meters). A highly visible floating wrist strap frees users’ hands when swimming or chasing the next big wave. Stylish silicone skins protect the camera from scratches.

Additionally, new carabineer straps available in blue and black attach directly to the camera and can be hooked to a bag, swimming suit or hiking shorts. Durable, sporty neoprene cases are also perfect for active or outdoor expeditions. Olympus Stylus Tough series cameras continue to make smooth transitions from outdoor adventures to cocktail parties. Rinse the camera and place it in an Olympus premium case for added sophistication. The premium cases are available in a variety of colors, including red, black and brown leather as well as various patterns.

OLYMPUS Master 2 Software
OLYMPUS Master 2 Software provides the ultimate in digital imaging management. An intuitive user interface makes downloading to your computer quick and simple, and images are easily organized by folders or albums and searchable by date in Calendar view. A direct link makes uploading your images and videos to YouTube™ easier than ever. Additionally, with one-click editing tools, such as red-eye removal, images can be touched up before printing or emailing. Online support, templates, firmware upgrades and other user services are just a mouse-click away. Use the optional muvee™ Theater Pack to create professional quality slide shows and DVDs from your pictures using any of several built-in templates. Additionally, create scrapbooks, greeting cards and other fun prints using the optional ArcSoft® Print Creations plug-in.

Pentax Optio W60: PENTAX Imaging Company has announced the PENTAX Optio W60 compact digital camera. Lightweight and fully waterproof, the Optio W60 features 10 megapixels and a 5X zoom lens with 28mm wide-angle capability. The enhanced design of the Optio W60 allows the camera to operate up to 13 feet underwater for two hours and at extreme temperatures well below freezing.

Perfect for photography in adventurous as well as everyday settings, the 5X optical zoom refraction lens never protrudes from the Optio W60, yet it covers focal lengths from 5mm to 25mm (approximately 28mm to 140mm in 35mm format). This range allows the camera to capture a wide variety of scenes including expansive landscapes, architecture, and group photos in confined spaces as well as close-up telephoto shots of subjects. A Digital Wide function merges two shots into one image for ultra-wide-angle image capture (equivalent to a focal length of 21mm in 35mm format).

The Optio W60 also accompanies users to new aquatic depths. With improved design and construction of the shutter button and controls, as well as reinforced, airtight joints, the Optio W60 allows underwater photography up to 30 percent deeper than previous PENTAX waterproof models. In addition to the JIS Class 8 waterproofing standard, the camera is JIS Class 5 dustproof against dirt, sand and dust and operates in extreme temperatures as cold as 14 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 10 degrees Celsius).

Other important features and modes of the PENTAX Optio W60 include a High-Quality Movie mode with HD resolution up to 1280 x 720 pixels (comparable to a 720p HDTV at 15fps) as well as Auto Picture mode, fast Face Recognition, Smile Capture, Blink Detection, an Underwater Movie mode, High Sensitivity Digital SR mode that automatically adjusts the sensitivity up to ISO 6400, and an LCD monitor with a 170 degree wide-angle view and Anti-Reflection coating to reduce glare.

A perfect companion for indoor and outdoor enthusiasts, the PENTAX Optio W60 performs well during winter and summer activities as well as in and around water and sand. The PENTAX Optio W60 will be available in July 2008 for US $329.95 in a choice of two colors: Ocean Blue and Silver.

Panasonic LUMIX DMC-TS1: Panasonic introduced the LUMIX DMC-TS1, the world’s first*1 waterproof, shockproof and dustproof digital camera*2 to also feature AVCHD Lite High Definition (HD) video recording capabilities*3.  The TS1’s tough and rugged design makes it the ideal choice for active users needing the ultimate hybrid for capturing both still and motion images during outdoor activities.  The LUMIX TS1, with a 12.1 megapixel resolution, features a 28mm wide-angle LEICA DC VARIO-ELMAR lens, a 4.6x optical zoom and Panasonic’s proprietary iA (Intelligent Auto) mode, making this an easy-to-use, yet powerful camera that packs advanced imaging features.

“Many consumers are hesitant to take their digital cameras on outdoor activities like skiing, hiking, boating or even a day at the beach, for fear it will be damaged.  With the introduction of the LUMIX TS1, we offer a digital camera with a rugged design that consumers can feel confident using in these tough environments,” said David Briganti, National Marketing Manager, Imaging, Panasonic Consumer Electronics Company. “Even more, with the ability to take both beautiful high-quality still images and High Definition video, with AVCHD Lite, the TS1 offers a powerful one-two punch to capture memories that can later be shared with friends and family.”

The TS1 is waterproof to a depth of 10 feet, shockproof from falls up to 5 feet, and dustproof.  With its rubber padding, reinforced glass and carbon resins inside the camera, the TS1 features an airtight body protected against water immersion, dust and sand.

Starting at the 28mm wide angle, and zooming up to a useful 128mm in telephoto, the TS1 gives users the flexibility for a variety of shooting environments – especially underwater, where movement is often restricted and the angle of view becomes important for composing shots.  The TS1 also features a 2.7-inch, 230,000-dot Intelligent LCD with a wide viewing angle, enhancing visibility during recording and playback by automatic brightness control according to the environment’s lighting conditions.  Plus, the TS1’s LCD panel is deliberately thickened for protection against pressure, allowing the display to operate with clear visibility even underwater.

The TS1 records AVCHD Lite HD video, allowing almost double the recording time in HD quality compared with the conventional Motion JPEG format. The TS1 also features Dolby Digital Creator to record high quality audio to match the high-quality motion images.

Also new in 2009, the TS1 features iA mode for both still images and in Movie Mode. For iA in Movie Mode, the TS1 features Optical Image Stabilization (O.I.S.), which helps prevent handshake when using high-powered zoom. Face Detection automatically detects a face in a frame and adjusts focus, exposure, contrast, and skin complexion on the face. Intelligent Exposure continually checks the ambient light level and adjusts the exposure setting as conditions change to prevent blown highlights and blocked shadows. And Intelligent Scene Selector automatically switches between Normal, Portrait, Macro, Scenery, and Low Light modes according to the situation to optimize visual quality.  A Wind Cut function is also available to block out most of the noise from background wind. Optical zoom can be used in motion image recording. Users can start video recording by simply pressing a dedicated button on the camera’s back panel.

The TS1’s iA for still image adds Face Recognition*4 – a feature that “remembers” faces from previous shots. When a registered face appears in the frame, the camera will prioritize focus and exposure to capture it beautifully.  With Face Recognition, when a familiar face is recorded several times, the camera will prompt you to register the face. Once registered, if the face appears into the frame again, the camera will display the name specified for that person and prioritize focus and exposure so that the registered face is bright and sharply focused.

The imaging power of LUMIX has further evolved with the Venus Engine HD, which boasts two CPUs to provide approx. 2.4x processing capability and support for Face Recognition, AVCHD Lite and HDMI output. It integrates the numerous advanced functions with high performance, and low-power consumption. Thanks to the Venus Engine HD, it’s easy to view photos or movies recorded in AVCHD Lite. Simply insert the SD Memory Card from the camera in the Panasonic VIERA® HDTV’s Image Viewer SD Memory Card slot to start playback, or connect the camera via an optional HDMI mini cable to a VIERA Link™-equipped Panasonic VIERA HDTV and use the TV’s remote control to run slideshows*5.

This multi-task image-processing engine also enables a fast response time. The TS1 starts up quickly in 1.3 seconds and shutter release time lag is approximately 0.005 seconds, making it easy to capture sudden, spur-of-the-moment photo opportunities.  The Flash Burst mode makes it possible to take consecutive shots with continuous emissions of the flash*6. The Venus Engine HD also supports a High Sensitivity mode that lets the TS1 record up to ISO 6400*7, sensitive enough to capture subjects in near-total darkness without using a flash.  Despite its outstanding performance, the high performance engine is also more energy efficient, extending the battery life up to 340 shots (CIPA) per a single charge.

The Panasonic LUMIX DMC-TS1 will be available in silver, green or orange models in April 2009 for a suggested retail price of $399.95.

Shimano Xtreme Fishing Invites Anglers to Choose a Weapon
New Wii Exclusive Game from Mastiff Includes Bowfishing, Spearfishing, and Traditional Rod & Reel Fishing
Shimano Xtreme Fishing challenges players to choose a weapon for a whole new take on fishing.

Embracing the wilder side of sport fishing, Shimano Xtreme Fishing is the only videogame to let players take the fight to the fish with bow and speargun in addition to the traditional rod and reel. Featuring cutting-edge fishing gear like Shimano Voltaeus fishing rods, Hoyt bows, AMS Bowfishing reels and accessories, and Muzzy arrow points, players hunt for a legendary catch from the deck of a free-roaming boat or underwater in full SCUBA gear.
But don’t think that the hunt will be easy, because the more extreme the gear, the more extreme the fish… More than 40 varieties inhabit the massive environments, with huge predators like sharks and alligators guarding the hottest fishing spots. Shimano Xtreme Fishing takes players through exotic environments ranging from the cold, dark waters of a North American reservoir to a roaring Amazon waterfall, eerie submerged Mayan ruins, the hidden lagoons of a southern island, and the shark-infested shipwrecks of a tropical sea.

Once the weapons – bowfishing gear, fishing rod, or spear gun and SCUBA – have been chosen, players can compete to unlock new tackle, clothing, and sporting accessories in a series of challenging tournaments, each with beautiful scenery and unique time and weather conditions. Players looking for a more open-ended fishing trip can roam the vast environments in search of new hot spots while mastering their weapons of choice in Free Fish mode.
“We weren’t interested in creating just another fishing game,” said Bill Swartz, Head Woof of Mastiff. “We wanted to give players something new – the very best equipment, an incredible selection of fish and locations, and most importantly, the rush that comes from extreme fishing, whether with rod, bow or spear.”

Shimano Xtreme Fishing will be available for Wii(tm) in summer 2009.

Albackore Sportfishing Gear

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009 by ttnews

I note from the owner of Albackore Sportfishing Gear…

“A NOTE ON THE ECONOMY:

Despite rumors published on certain websites … Albackore is not going out of business. Has the economy had an impact on us? Yes, and just like thousands of businesses across the nation, we’ve had to shrink staffing, discontinue products, as well as trim our advertising and marketing programs. Some products have been discontinued due to decreased demand or the introduction of similar products by other manufacturers, including the Albackore Jig Wraps, Jig Keepers and Reel Transports. I’m sure you will see these products on sale this season!

Finally, I’d like to thank all of the customers that have supported us throughout the years and I wish you all the best in the coming year. Hang in there!

Sincerely yours,

Jeff Jost”

Gill Adds Two New Styles to Waterproof Bags Range

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009 by ttnews

Gill has increased its range of waterproof bags to now include a 5 Liter and 50 Liter Dry Cylinder Bags. A dry bag is useful in all boating environments, whether you are sailing, motor boating, paddling, or fishing.

Gill dry bags are made from durable waterproof fabric with roll-down closures that have integral snap buckles and webbing reinforcement to create a simple watertight seal. Each bag has a full-length translucent mesh reinforced panel so that you can easily see what’s inside.

The Dry Cylinder Bags have rounded bases that make them stable and easy to fit in the many awkward spaces often found in and around boats. When not in use, the bags fold flat and are easily stowed.

The L055 5-liter bag is ideal for storing smaller items and could be used as the crew’s ‘valuables’ bag, storing wallets, purses, mobile phones, keys and change.

Lance Jones, Gill North America’s Marketing and Sales Associate says, “I love this piece of kit! My wife and I each have a 5, 10 and 25-liter bag. The 5 Liter is perfect for overnight trips while the 10-liter lends itself well for a weekend excursion. We both use the 25 for carting clothing and other soft goods to our boat. One other nice feature is that you can put all sorts of stuff you don’t want to get wet like wallets, cell phones and the like, roll it up, snap it around your belt, and then swim to shore. No worries about your possessions getting wet!”

The L056 50-liter bag comes with a detachable shoulder strap and is ideal for larger loads such as clothing and waterproofs.

Available in 2009, the Lowrance sideviewing sonar technology depicts the underwater world of bottom and structure in photo-like presentations.

Presenting an advanced new dimension in bottom and structure viewing, Lowrance side-viewing sonar delivers the same legendary total-sonar performance that anglers have come to expect from Lowrance. In addition, the side-viewing sonar works in tandem with existing high-definition 2D sonar displays – powered by the built-in HDS Broadband Sounder.

A simple, cost-efficient add-on module, the new side-viewing technology is easily networked using Lowrance Ethernet connections, allowing anglers to enjoy the Lowrance sonar advantage on all HDS displays mounted on their boat.

Designed by the leader in recreational fishfinder innovation, the new Lowrance side-viewing sonar option is welcome news for serious and pro anglers, as well as those involved in underwater search and recovery, marine archeology and marine ecology sciences.

Full details, pricing and a projected 2009 availability date for the new Lowrance side-viewing supplemental HDS sonar technology option is expected to be released at the American Sportfishing Association’s ICAST trade show in Orlando, Florida in July.

Canon PowerShot D10 waterproof camera

Friday, February 20th, 2009 by ttnews

Canon has launched their first waterproof compact camera, the PowerShot D10. It is said to be waterproof up to 10 meters below, freeze proof up to -10 degrees, shock-proof from 1.22 meters high, and dust proof. From the specs it seems like it’s a rival to the Olympus line of waterproof cameras.

The Canon PowerShot D10 has a 12.1MP sensor, 3X optical zoom, and a 2.5 inch LCD, and includes Smart Auto Mode, Face Select & Track, Blink Detection and Face Self-timer.

The Face Select & Track I’ved used before in on the SD790IS and it’s pretty awesome, especially when taking photos of moving subjects.

Suggested Retail Price: $329.99

Goes where others can’t:
From surfing to snorkelling, skiing to mountaineering, the PowerShot D10 is designed to accompany users on every adventure – it’s waterproof to 10m*, can withstand the shock of a drop onto a hard surface from 1.22m, is dustproof** and will function at temperatures as low as -10oC.

A range of protective accessories are available to keep the camera safe in challenging environments, including soft case, shoulder, neck and carabiner straps***. Thanks to an innovative connection system on the corners of the camera’s body, a secure and convenient set-up can be tailored for different activities. Users can also customise their camera’s appearance with an optional coloured Front Cover Set, and protect it from knocks and scuffs with a soft case.

Exceptional quality
Incredible 12.1 Megapixel resolution is captured by the camera’s sensor, allowing the freedom to crop or enlarge images while retaining outstanding image detail. The 3x zoom lens offers a range of versatile framing options, with Image Stabilizer preventing camera-shake from causing unwanted blur. This is particularly useful when participating in the high-movement activities for which the camera is designed.

Easy to use
To ensure that users stay focused on the action, DIGIC 4 powers a host of intelligent features that make great photos effortless. A new Smart Auto mode uses Scene Detection Technology to analyse the shooting scene in detail – checking subject brightness, contrast, distance and overall hue. The camera then selects the optimum mode from 18 possible choices, ensuring perfect settings for the scene.

Even the most active situations can be photographed blur-free thanks to Canon’s Motion Detection Technology, which detects both camera and subject movement and adjusts settings accordingly. Naturally great people shots are assured by Face Detection Technology, which now also includes new Blink Detection, to avoid the disappointment of mistimed people shots. Canon’s i-Contrast brightens dark areas in an image without blowing out lighter areas.

The PowerShot D10 also features a special 2.5” PureColor LCD II, which has been specially modified for better outdoor performance. Protected by a 2mm protective shield, it offers double the brightness of a normal PureColor LCD II – allowing easy framing or image review in virtually any environment.

From the beach to the ski-slopes, a wide range of shooting modes and Special Scene modes – including dedicated Underwater, Snow and Beach modes – delivers instant fingertip access to the correct settings. FaceSelf-Timer simplifies group shots by waiting until the user enters the frame before shooting.

“The PowerShot D10 is a boundary-breaking camera,” commented Rainer Fuehres, Head of Canon Consumer Imaging Europe. “It brings the hallmarks of the PowerShot range – exceptional imaging and ease of use – to places where many other cameras simply cannot go.”
