Bass Anglers – Industry Buzzing About Skeeter’s New FX Series

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009 by ttnews

Skeeter dealers, Bassmaster Elite Series professional anglers, industry insiders and grassroots tournament anglers nationwide are buzzing about the company’s recently introduced FX Series, featuring Yamaha’s revolutionary new VMAX® SHO™ four-stroke engines.

In an industry first, Skeeter engineers were able to design the FX Series in tandem with Yamaha’s VMAX SHO, giving Skeeter an edge in the development of a new hull, running surface and deck.

A select group of Skeeter dealers from across the country recently had the opportunity to test the FX21 and FX20 first-hand at Yamaha’s test facility in Bridgeport, Alabama.

“The FX Series is exactly what our dealers were looking for leading into the 2010 boat show season,” says Ben Jarrett, Skeeter’s National Sales Manager.  “We gave our dealers the ‘wow’ factor that each needs to drive traffic and potential Skeeter owners into their dealerships,” added Jarrett.

Ken Hollis, owner of Airport Marine in Alabaster, Alabama describes the FX Series as “awesome.”  “The hole shot on a fully-trimmed motor is incredible, and the entire boat/motor package has everything that current bass boat owners are looking for in a new boat – a quick hole shot, good shallow water take offs, excellent top-end speed and fuel efficiency.  Folks won’t believe you can get this type of performance from a bass boat with a four-stroke engine,” says Hollis.

Additionally, several Team Skeeter professional anglers also had the opportunity to run the FX Series for the first time.  Skeeter’s Alton Jones, Kelly Jordan and Dean Rojas spent time on the Tennessee River running the FX Series.

“The FX Series will make it more difficult keeping up with the Jones’s next season,” says Bassmaster Classic Champion, Alton Jones.  “I’m blown away by this boat/motor combination, as this isn’t simply an advance in boating technology, it’s a quantum leap for the entire marine industry.  In my 20 years as a BASS pro, I’ve never seen anything like it.”

Skeeter’s Kelly Jordan agrees with his fellow Skeeter teammate, adding that, “the FX Series is a continuation of the Skeeter product, which is the best running and fishing platform available.  The FX Series screams ‘Let’s Go Fishing!’”

According to Jarrett, production has already begun on several FX Series models for Team Skeeter anglers participating in February’s Bassmaster Classic on Lay Lake outside of Birmingham, Alabama.

“The 2010 Bassmaster Classic will definitely be a coming-out party for the FX Series, and the huge audiences attending the Classic, as well as those watching on television, will get to see the high-end performance of the next generation of bass boats,” says Jarrett.

Jarrett indicated that Skeeter is in the process of planning a nationwide demo tour, giving boaters and anglers the opportunity to feel the Skeeter difference.  “As a BASS sponsor, we plan to utilize the 2010 Elite Series events as a way to showcase the FX Series,” he added.
Skeeter’s next generation of bass boats, the FX20 and FX21, was designed specifically to run with exceptional performance when combined with Yamaha’s new VMAX SHO 200 hp, 225 hp and 250 hp engines.  Skeeter increased the size of its sponson area an additional 1.7 cu ft, the equivalent of removing two batteries from the boat.  Next, Skeeter designed wider and sharper strakes along the running surface to provide lift and deflect water for more speed, better turning ability and a smoother ride.  These innovations lead to a dry and stable ride, with no chine walking and no backwash.

Boyd Duckett – Duckett Fishing Rods

Friday, November 27th, 2009 by ttnews

Duckett parted with e21 just this July and many were wondering what’s he up to next. Not just Boyd but Ken Whiting as well. This is what the pair is up to. They are introducing a new company called Duckett Fishing. Here’s more info…

Boyd Duckett, the 2007 Bassmaster Classic champion and one of the top professional anglers on the ESPN BASS Elite Series tour, announced today that he has established an Alabama-based company that will produce innovative, high-end fishing rods that introduce microguide technology.

The new company, Duckett Fishing LLC, will manufacture rods that were created and tested by industry-leading designers and professional anglers. The ultra-lightweight rods – called “MicroMagic” – offer unmatched sensitivity and, because of the rods’ microguides, will allow anglers to significantly increase their casting distance and accuracy, Duckett said.

Duckett will use MicroMagic rods competitively beginning in February at the 2010 Bassmaster Classic. He added that other pro anglers will soon join Duckett Fishing’s professional staff.

“I can’t begin to tell you how excited I am about this venture. What we’re doing at Duckett Fishing is making rods that take existing technology to a whole new level. What we’ve done with microguides is extremely special and ahead of the curve. We developed these rods by getting a lot of input from custom rod builders who know what they’re doing. Then we combined that with the best kind of research and development – on the water testing by pro anglers,” Duckett said.

“Our company slogan is, ‘Driven by pros, not by profits.’ What that means is that our rods were developed literally by and for pros, so people who buy this rod will be getting a rod that professionals built and like. I’ll be fishing with them in the Classic. But the second part of this is that our decisions won’t be ‘corporate-style” decisions. We’re don’t intend to cut corners and offer an inferior product. We’re committed to producing rods that truly help anglers.

Duckett Fishing was incorporated earlier this month and is based in Demopolis , Alabama . Duckett is the only BASS Elite Series angler to ever start and manage a major fishing products company. Duckett said the rods will be available online through the company Web site, www.duckettfishing.com. Next year the rods will be available in retails stores.

As he established the new company, Duckett re-assembled the development team that created the award-winning prototype for Carrot Stix fishing rods, popular, light-weight orange rods. Duckett and designer Ken Whiting were instrumental in the initial development and branding success attributed to Carrot Stix.

Earlier this year, however, Duckett severed ties with the manufacturer and distributor of Carrot Stix: Toronto, Canada-based E-21. Duckett split with E-21 primarily because of what he described in a July 2009 news release as concerns “about the general quality of the rods being made and how warranties are being honored.” In splitting with E-21, Duckett stated that the rods weren’t being produced as they were initially designed.

The split with E-21 prompted Duckett’s decision to create his own company. Whiting and E-21 executive Sean Schuyler have joined Duckett at Duckett Fishing.

“This is the right thing to do. We have assembled a terrific team, and we’re hitting the ground running. We’ll have some exciting announcements over the next few months,” Duckett said.  “But what is so significant is that this allows our team to have control over our product. We’ll be in position to make sure there is a high standard when it comes to production.”

We finally have full control of quality and production and can offer the public innovation that’s not purely profit driven.

The 2010 Bassmaster Classic will be held in February on Lay Lake , near Birmingham , Alabama . Duckett won the 2007 Classic, which was also held on Lay Lake .

“It will be pretty special to be using these new rods at Lay Lake during the greatest fishing tournament in the world,” Duckett said.

“I can’t over-emphasize how terrific it is to be working with the folks who are coming to Duckett Fishing, and I promise that we will work as hard as we can work to produce and deliver exceptional rods. Our goal is to offer anglers state-of-the-art technology that gives them an advantage on the water.”

Although he had spent more than 20 years fishing competitively, Duckett burst onto the national stage in 2007 when he won the Bassmaster Classic and the Bassmaster Legends, a “major” tournament. That year, Duckett set a single-season BASS earnings record. He also won the title at the 2007 Ultimate Match Fishing competition, a made-for-television event featured on the Outdoor Channel.

In addition to Duckett Fishing, Duckett also owns a successful product-transport business: Southern Tank Leasing, an Alabama-based enterprise that delivers products in the Southeast, Midwest and Southwest.

Skeeter Launches FX Series Bass Boats with New Yamahas

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009 by ttnews

In an industry first, Skeeter Products, Inc. introduces its revolutionary new FX Series, featuring two bass boats designed to be introduced with Yamaha’s new “game changer” Four-Stroke V6 VMAX® SHO™ outboard engines.

Skeeter’s next generation of bass boats, the FX20 and FX21, was designed specifically to run with exceptional performance when combined with Yamaha’s new VMAX SHO 200 hp, 225 hp and 250 hp engines.

“The FX continues our aggressive new product strategy well into the next decade, and our partnership with Yamaha on this boat/motor package enabled us to manufacture a product with a better hole shot and higher top-end speed, with the benefit of the better fuel economy that a four-stroke engine has to offer,” says Jeff Stone, Skeeter Senior Vice President/General Manager.

According to Stone, the FX Series is sure to meet and exceed the demands of tournament anglers and serious bass fishing enthusiasts seeking the highest performing bass boat on the market.  “We took our motto ‘Engineered Like No Other’ to the max with the development of the FX Series,” adds Stone.

For the FX Series, Skeeter increased the size of its sponson area an additional 1.7 cu ft, the equivalent of removing two batteries from the boat.  Next, Skeeter designed wider and sharper strakes along the running surface to provide lift and deflect water for more speed, better turning ability and a smoother ride.  These innovations lead to a dry and stable ride, with no chine walking and no backwash.

Each engine in Yamaha’s VMAX SHO family of outboards has an all-new four-stroke 4.2-liter V6 powerhead that provides the best power-to-weight ratio in its class.  New materials make the engines lighter, more efficient and powerful.  Larger throttle valves, intake and exhaust valves and water pickups ensure peak efficiency and performance.  Yamaha also employed plasma-fused sleeveless cylinders instead of steel sleeves to provide a durable surface for the engine’s piston rings, thus reducing the overall weight of the VMAX SHO by 34 pounds compared to its two-stroke predecessor, the VMAX®.

“In the past, all bass fishermen were concerned about was speed – getting to their fishing spot before anyone else.  Even as times have changed, Skeeter and Yamaha still deliver the speed and fishability that anglers need to be competitive, but with the FX Series, we can also deliver a higher level of overall performance, reliability, efficiency and style in a single boat,” says Ben Jarrett, Skeeter’s National Sales Manager.

“This was a no-compromise effort in the long and tedious design and planning process, building a bass boat series to meet the expectations and demands of what modern fishermen expect in a boat,” says Jarrett.

“The FX20 and FX21 are entirely new boats, with an entirely newly designed deck and hull.  A completely new high performance profile gives the new FX series a completely new look that defines the words under our logo  “Performance Fishing Boats” says Jarrett.

The FX Series features a new Digital Multifunctional System (DMS) that runs a new boat security/alarm system and iForce locks, and also serves as a command center that controls Yamaha’s multifunction gauges.  The cockpit, with available dual-console option, includes tilt hydraulic steering, driver and passenger glove boxes, custom grab handles, side panels, non-skid mats and bump stick holder, and upholstered full-flex seating with an under seat 30-quart ice chest.  A foot-throttle and pro tilt and trim behind the new custom-made performance steering wheel are standard.

“Unlike most bass boat designs, our gas tanks are not located mid-ship under the seats, which allows us to optimize storage space for gear and tackle ” says Jarrett.  The FX20 and FX21 feature 34-gallon rear livewells with independent fill, recirculating and drain modes, and adjustable pump timer and pump-out.  A 28-quart in-floor compartment doubles as storage for gear or as an ice chest.  Additional gear compartments are found under the aft and bow fishing decks, including a removable day box and an integrated rod storage holder.  Storage compartments feature gas-assisted lifts for ease of access.

A digital bow panel includes trolling motor receptacle, lighting, and trim switches.  Auto or manual 1500 GPH bilge pump, interior lighting, standard high performance 12” Jack place with two stern eyes, 15 Amp x 4-bank Minn Kota battery charger with charging inlet and 6-gauge trolling motor wiring system with four battery trays are also standard on both models.  With a dual, 50-gallon fuel tank, combined with Yamaha’s VMAX SHO high performance offerings with unmatched fuel economy, the FX21 and FX20 will get you to your fishing spots on fewer dollars.

Both the FX20 and FX21 come standard with a Humminbird 788 dash-mounted fish finder and 728 bow-mounted fish finder with transducers, temperature probes, GPS antenna and interlink system, and Minn Kota Max 101 foot-operated, 101 lbs. thrust, 36V, 42” shaft trolling motor.  Also standard is an FX touring trailer with tandem axle, disc brakes, spare tire carrier, swing tongue, ratchet tie-downs, aluminum wheels, color coordinated Euro-Step, polymer fenders, custom lighting and torsion axles.

Backed by Skeeter’s High Performance Engineering Concepts, the FX Series features an Aluminum Torque Transfer Transom and Stringer System, adhering high-test aircraft structural aluminum to the Ex-cel transom, thus significantly reducing stress on the transom, deck and sides.  Composite one-piece flooring is composed of PVC cross-linked foam, sandwiched between layers of fiberglass.  The Ex-cel composites used in the transom and stringers add outstanding strength and durability.  Skeeter’s aluminum deck grid provides superior support and strength, with lids that close tightly and lock securely.
The FX Series may be personalized with a host of optional features, including enhanced hull, deck color and graphics packages, dual console, electronics packages from Hummingbird and Lowrance, Yamaha Command Link, live-well aeration system, 12” hydraulic jack-plate, carpet padding, trolling motor options from Minn Kota or Motor Guide, in-floor cooler exchange, 13” fixed fishing seat, bike seat with Power Pro Pole, Hamby keel protector, Sirius-ready, AM-FM stereo with CD player, wired remote control and speakers, boarding ladder, tackle storage system and trailer upgrades.

MSRP: FX21/SHO250 $70,810, FX21/SHO225 $69,460, FX20/SHO250 $69,280, FX20/SHO225 $67,930.

Future Fisherman Foundation Launches “Tournaments for Tomorrow” Program

Monday, November 16th, 2009 by ttnews

The Future Fisherman Foundation (F3) today announced the launch of a new program, Tournaments for Tomorrow, that will provide financial support for youth fishing programs such as the mentor-based Hooked on Fishing Not on Drugs program, the school-based Physh Ed angling and boating education program, and the Boys & Girls Clubs’ C.A.T.C.H. after-school fishing program.

“Since 1986, more than one million children in 50 states have been introduced to fishing, boating and conservation through their participation in these important national programs,” said F3 Executive Director Keith Sutton. “But sustaining these efforts requires hundreds of thousands of dollars each year to provide teacher training, program materials and staff support. It wouldn’t be possible without partners who provide financial assistance, including tournament fishing organizations such as Bass Pro Shops’ Crappie Masters Tournament Trail that have raised thousands of dollars to help fund F3’s vital kids fishing programs. Through their encouragement, we created the new Tournaments for Tomorrow program so tournament groups everywhere have a simple way for their members to make contributions as well. It’s a mutually beneficial arrangement—a win-win deal for the tournament organization, the Foundation, the fishing community and future generations.”

Each organization that enrolls agrees to raise funds by asking tournament participants to contribute an extra $5 to $10 per entry fee, or an amount of their choosing, to support F3 programs. Alternatively, the organization can “pass the hat” (or maybe pass a bait bucket!) at their opening events and ask for contributions. Members can give an amount that’s comfortable for them. And while individual donations may not be much more than the cost of a single fishing lure, some groups have raised hundreds of dollars at a single event, an important contribution that provides fishing experiences and education for dozens of children.

Upon enrollment in the program, the organization will be licensed to use the Future Fisherman Foundation “Proud Partner” logo in their publications and on their website to show their members support efforts to ensure the future of fishing. F3 also will send a special DVD the Tournaments for Tomorrow chairperson can use to show tournament participants and club members how their dollars will help. Each club will receive recognition for their participation in the Foundation newsletter and in the “Partners” section of the F3 website. Additionally, the Foundation will use their blog and Facebook pages to help publicize youth events held in conjunction with each organization’s tournaments.

“We’ve been contacted by dozens of tournament groups throughout the country that want to get involved with the Foundation’s youth outreach programs,” Sutton said. “Becoming part of our Tournaments for Tomorrow initiative is a great way they can show their support and let the world know they have the same mission we do—to provide quality fishing experiences for every child in America. Working together with the thousands of fishing clubs and competitive anglers around the country, we can make this dream a reality.”

For additional information about the Tournaments for Tomorrow program, including a downloadable enrollment form, visit the Future Fisherman Foundation’s website, or contact Keith Sutton at (703) 402-3623 or ksutton@futurefisherman.org.

2010 Ranger Z518 and Z519 Comanche Models

Monday, October 26th, 2009 by ttnews

For competitive anglers, fishing guides and boating enthusiasts, Ranger’s Z500 Series is the most sought after collection of high performance fishing boats on the market today. These scientifically advanced designs fused with Ranger’s legendary construction standards represent a legacy of leadership some 40 years in the making.

Building on that heritage, the all-new Z518 and Z519 further establish Ranger’s Z500 Series and bring even more options to anglers looking for the ultimate fishing experience. Both models feature the look, feel and muscle associated with Ranger’s flagship designs.  Stainless steel hardware, compression lid locks, plush interiors and an industry-leading list of standard equipment highlight these newest members of the Ranger Family.

“The momentum we’ve seen build around our Z500 Series has been incredible,” said Ranger Boats President Randy Hopper. “We owe so much of that to the input we received from customers, dealers and pro staff members across the country. The new Z518 and Z519 really signal the unprecedented depth, performance and versatility of this Z-Comanche lineup.”

Both the Z518 and Z519 feature an ultra competitive price as well as the same smooth, responsive and dry ride characteristics for which Ranger is known. The Z518 measures 18 feet, 8 inches in length and carries a maximum 200 horsepower rating; a configuration extremely popular among anglers looking for a smaller, more maneuverable design with plenty of power. Available with a wide range of factory-rigged outboards, the Z518 is balanced by a 38-gallon fuel capacity, 92 ½ -inch beam and features a storage system built with the tournament angler in mind. Standard equipment includes a Minn Kota trolling motor, Lowrance electronics, LED compartment light package, on-board battery charger, remote oil fill, Ranger’s exclusive SRS Soft Ride Seating system and much more.

For anglers looking for a slightly larger package, the Z519 measures a comfortable 19 feet, 6 inches and carries a maximum 225 horsepower rating. Much like the Z518, the Z519 features loads of standard equipment including Lowrance electronics, a Minn Kota trolling motor, padded front casting deck, multi-function gauge package, integrated tackle management system and much more. The Z519’s interior is highlighted by a completely redesigned console that’s not only taller for more protection, but offers built-in mounting options for today’s popular, large-screened electronics directly above the steering wheel – eliminating the need for gimbal and swivel mounts in most cases. The redesigned consoles also integrate a stylish-yet-functional concave beveling on the outside, allowing the tips of rods stored on the front deck to stay more secure while in use.

Like all Ranger boats, the Z518 and Z519 come paired with their own custom-built and serial-number-specific RangerTrail trailer. Designed to perfectly match the boat to ensure years of smooth, easy towing and maneuvering, the trailer is equipped with Road Armor finish, L.E.D. lights and Ranger’s exclusive COOL Hub® lubrication system as standard equipment. Designed and built in the same factory and to the same exacting specifications as all Ranger boats, RangerTrail trailers are custom aligned with individually balanced wheels, feature swing jacks that retract flush to the frame as well as torsion axle suspension and locking, swing-away tongues. With matching fiberglass fenders and matching spare, the RangerTrail trailer delivers peace of mind when trailering and complement the striking good looks of Ranger boats.

“The Rock” Multi-purpose Sinkers

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009 by ttnews

While any mention of the “The Rock” is likely to conjure up different images among football aficionados than it does from anglers, the reference is still probably going to bring smiles to the faces of both.

Therefore, it seems only appropriate that Jewel has named its new lead fishing sinker “The Rock,” because this most innovative fishing weight design ever borrows its heritage from both sports.

The Rock is the perfect cross between a traditional worm sinker and the popular football jig, getting the very best traits of both items. It looks like a football head, but it has a hole entirely through it just like any slip sinker does. All similarities to previous fishing weights stop there.

For starters, The Rock has an angled hole and specialized surfaces to allow for two different rigging options. Run the line through the sinker in the direction that puts the weight’s flat surface on the underside and The Rock will roll and tumble over rocks and other obstacles like nothing else.

Reverse the line direction so the sinker’s “shovel” side faces forward and The Rock stirs up the bottom when fishing irregular areas of sand, clay, pea gravel, etc. The versatility means that the Rock Rig is the ideal single solution for both Texas rigging and Carolina rigging.

“Who would have ever imagined that something as simple as a fishing sinker was going to benefit from computer-design technology using the principles of physics and mathematical calculations,” said Gayle Julian, Jewel founder and president. “The Rock still has the same ol’ job of getting a bait down to structure, but once there it truly becomes a fishing tool for today’s modern anglers.”

The Rock is available in 1/2 and 3/4 ounce sizes and is unpainted.  The 1/2-ounce size is sold four per pack, and the 3/4 ounce comes three per package.

MotorGuide VariMAX Kayak

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009 by ttnews

MotorGuide’s new VariMAX Digital Kayak trolling motors offer the finest in electric trolling motor performance in salt and fresh water, giving all small boat anglers better control and longer run times than have previously been available.

This special model V45 is a 12-volt, 45-pound thrust motor. Its VariMAX technology allows precise digital variable speed control with 3.5X more run time from a single battery charge than the common 5-speed transom-mounted trolling motors. A built-in BluVis multi-functional gauge indicates the speed level setting and the battery’s charge status at a glance for quick reference throughout a day on the water.

VariMAX Kayak features a 20-inch stainless steel shaft for the perfect amount of trolling motor bite and clearance, making it ideal for mounting on the bow or transom of any small boat. For bow operation, the motor’s head can be easily reversed to pull the boat for the ultimate in front-of-the-boat control.

What really sets VariMAX apart from other small craft trolling motors is its variable speed versatility. Variable speed means there is a full range of infinite settings from low to high so the angler has total control in finding the perfect speed setting for the conditions at hand. Speed adjustments are made by simply twisting the motor’s handle right to increase and left to decrease. The direction of thrust is just as intuitive in operation, pushing the handle forward to go forward, and pulling it back for reverse.

The trolling motor’s construction is durable, stylish and functional. The VariMAX Kayak model is built on MotorGuide’s proven 3.5-inch lower unit and features the brand’s legendary Great White corrosion protection for saltwater use, meaning this motor can also endure any freshwater fishing application.

The VariMAX Kayak model retails for under $300, and is available through traditional sporting goods stores and marine dealers. For more information, visit MotorGuide.com

MSNBC: Male Bass with Eggs?

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 by ttnews

WASHINGTON – Government scientists figure that one out of five male black bass in American river basins have egg cells growing inside their sexual organs, a sign of how widespread fish feminizing has become.

The findings come from the U.S. Geological Survey in its first comprehensive examination of intersex fish in America, a problem linked to women’s birth control pills and other hormone treatments that seep into rivers. Sporadic reports of feminized fish have been reported for a few years.

The agency looked at past data from nine river basins, which cover about two-thirds of the United States — and found that about 6 percent of the nearly 1,500 male fish had a bit of female in them. The study looked at 16 different species, with most not affected.

Rapala Introduces the New MaxRap 13

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009 by ttnews

Conditions are never climate controlled when you’re out there after fish. Wind, spray, and the bobbing platform of a boat can all contribute to falling short when you try to make that long cast. It’s about covering water… but covering water with the wounded minnow performance of a Rapala… that’s what it’s all about.

Shallow flats can spread out for miles. And when you’re standing on shore, or up to your armpits wearing waders, casting distance is the difference between success and failure.

Say hello to your new long distance buddy – MaxRap™ 13.

Long and lean in all the right color schemes, measuring 5 1/4 inches long. First thing you’ll notice is the slightly arched back. You’ll see it’s all Rapala, with fine details like oversized holographic eyes and internal, laser-engraved scales to go with a baitfish-inspired paint job.

Its razor sharp, noncorrosive VMC Spark Point treble hooks are a thing of beauty, too. They stand up to saltwater and downright nasty predator fish.

Hold it in your hands and the heft is obvious, a full half-ounce of perfectly-balanced proportions. Put it on the end of your line and cast as hard as you can and the balance is so pure that it zings like a perfect spiral. No wobbling, no tangling of hooks. It holds its position in the air thanks to the internal MaxCast mechanism, precision placed tungsten balls that provide self-adjusting balance under changing conditions.

Start reeling and you’re reminded that there’s only one Rapala. Crank it steady, fast as you want, or twitch-and-pause and watch it reflect light like the real thing (if you can see that far). When a fish crushes it, you’ll know you have a new partner in crime.

Whatever you want to catch, in freshwater or saltwater, big, bad fish fall for the flash and foil of MaxRap™. Shallow water fish have nowhere to hide. They can’t get far enough away. Great Trolling Lure, Too…

Something this good cannot be typecast for casting alone. It’s an awesome trolling bait, too. Run it steady or pump the rod, but hang on at all times, because you’re gonna get bit. To cover the water column from just under the surface to inky depths, use whatever weighting system you like best. Try rubber-core sinkers, snap weights, leadcore, planing devices, or pull it behind a downrigger ball.

Ranger Extends Partnership with Industry-Leading Lowrance Electronics

Monday, August 17th, 2009 by ttnews

Ranger Boats, manufacturers of the world’s most sought-after fishing boats, recently announced the continuation of a long-standing partnership with Lowrance Electronics/NAVICO.  The announcement keeps industry leaders together to provide anglers with the ultimate in innovation and performance on the water.

The news follows the recent introduction of Ranger’s 2010 models – confirming Lowrance Electronics as standard equipment on many of the company’s 40-plus models, including a number of designs with factory-installed, full-color HDS units.

“Lowrance has a strong name and great brand awareness in the marine electronics category,” said Ranger Boats President Randy Hopper. “We continually strive to provide our customers with the ultimate fishing experience and the advantages Lowrance offers – whether it’s the new high-definition sonar, broadband radar or GPS – allow us to do just that.”

Ranger customers will have premium access to the award-winning technology and features available from Lowrance/NAVICO.  The new HDS (high-definition system) has been praised by anglers and industry insiders as “the most exceptional electronics system ever unveiled.” Combine this with superior networking features, available radar and weather monitoring capabilities and the highly anticipated introduction of “structure scan technology,” and the result is a perfect match for the world’s most discerning fisherman and boat owners.

“We’re extremely excited to continue our partnership with Ranger Boats,” said Sean Hatherley, Lowrance Director of OEM Sales.  “Their commitment to quality and product innovation is a passion we share at Lowrance and we look forward to providing anglers with the tools necessary to maximize their time on the water.”

Ranger’s new 2010 model lineup includes introductions designed around the ability to flush-mount popular large-screen electronics like the HDS-8 and HDS-10 from Lowrance. The all-new Z521 Comanche features a totally redesigned console with room to center mount an HDS-8, while the new 621VS Fisherman – also sporting a new console – provides room to flush mount the HDS-10.  Both options were driven by input and feedback from anglers across the country.

PAA Moves 2009 Corporate Cup to Early Summer of 2010

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009 by ttnews

In light of new opportunities and the recent growth of the Professional
Anglers Association, the PAA has decided to reschedule the 2009 Corporate Cup for June 3-5, 2010.  The
event will continue to be hosted by Florence/Lauderdale Tourism on Pickwick Lake in Florence, AL. This
additional time will allow new partnerships to develop and contribute to the overall strength of the
event.

As a result of the new dates, anglers now receive additional practice time prior to the off limits of the
2009 Toyota Texas Bass Classic. The change also allows the PAA to support the membership competing
in the BASS Post Season Championship and the FLW Series events in September. The new time of year
should ensure some impressive catches, and work well within the existing 2010 tournament schedules.
According to John Crews, President of the PAA, “Moving the event makes sense for a lot of reasons. We
are anticipating great participation because of the schedule timing. We are also anticipating great
catches that time of year on Pickwick. I am really pumped about the event!”

ProControll brings foot-steer convenience to hand operated trolling motors

Saturday, August 1st, 2009 by ttnews

Traditional hand operated transom-style trolling motors can now be foot controlled, regardless of whether the motor is mounted on the boat’s transom, bow or side … thanks to an ingenious and affordable new aftermarket product called ProControll.

ProControll is a foot-steering system, patent-pending design made to work with 12-volt trolling motors of any kind and thrust that have a shaft-locking feature. The system consists of an innovative clamp mount and precision-engineered foot pedal that, together, turn a transom mount trolling motor into a foot-steered model with selectable continuous-run or momentary on/off operation.

Costing little more than $100 and easy to install, ProControll provides the same kind of hands-free advantages that come with the much more expensive bow mount foot-controlled trolling motors.

“I grew up fishing in Kansas on a limited budget and with a boat having a trolling motor on the back,” explained ProControll inventor Richard Mynster. “From my own experiences, I knew firsthand the frustrating compromises of trying to fish and operate a trolling motor at the same time. ProControll is the result of those experiences and my inherited mechanical inclinations.”

Mynster and other officials at RM Industries, a Kansas City, Kansas, design and development firm specializing in the introduction of marine products, say ProControll meets all their original objectives.

“We wanted this product to be quality built, made in the United States and affordable to every angler who owns a trolling motor, regardless of his or her level of fishing skill and participation,” said president Michael Rhodes. “Based on the responses we got from trolling motor manufacturers, sporting goods buyers and anglers during our recent debut at ICAST, our design homework and efforts seem to have been right on target. We couldn’t have asked for a better reception to ProControll than what we received.”

The ProControll mount and foot pedal are made of rustproof, virtually indestructible fiberglass reinforced nylon for strength, durability and long life in harsh marine environments. The mount’s pivot shaft is machined from 17-4 precipitation hardened stainless steel; its stainless steel bearings are hermetically sealed for further protection from the elements. Weight of the mount and pedal combined is less than 9 pounds.

The ProControll foot pedal brings a modern look and design to the traditional style foot-control steering device that operates with a heel-to-toe rocker motion. Steering is achieved through a pull-pull dual cable system, the easiest to operate and most reliable of all mechanical-steer systems. Cables are plastic lined, 5mm coated steel for the ultimate in strength and smooth operation. The design allows trolling motor steering adjustments of up to 180 degrees.

The real beauty of ProControll is that its mount and foot pedal are a self-contained steering system that work independently of the trolling motor; that’s why it can work with any transom model having a friction lock, so the shaft can be snugged in place and kept from turning in its own bracket. ProControl’s pivotal mounting block is what turns the fixed-position motor when the user works the foot pedal, applying toe pressure to steer to the right and heel pressure to go left.

Foot-Steer AND Hand-Steer

Aside from the obvious benefit of freeing up anglers’ hands for fishing, ProControll has many other advantages. The ProControll mount fits anywhere on a boat where its screw clamps can be secured, meaning it can often be affixed to a boat’s transom, side or bow.

A big plus is for anglers who like to put their transom motors on the boat’s bow so that it pulls instead of pushes. The ProControll design means the motor’s head doesn’t have to be reversed for this application as normally required; the motor can be simply positioned in its own bracket to run forward and then mounted to ProControll on the front of the boat for pedal steering, just like with a regular bow mount foot-controlled trolling motor.

However, a huge advantage of ProControll over the built-in foot-controlled cable systems is that it allows normal hand steering of the trolling motor at any time as desired. This can be especially effective when maneuvering in and out of tight areas such as stump fields, or in the unlikely event a cable should become inoperable.

In fact, hand controlled steering is recommended when the motor is being operated at high thrust settings above normal fishing operation, such as when using the trolling motor to move from one spot to the next, because of torque at high speeds. Normal fishing operation is in the 10- to 30-pound thrust range.

Installation Takes Only Minutes

The ProControll installation process is simple, first requiring the system’s universal mount be secured to the desired location on the boat using the built-in screw clamps fitted with oversized and easy-to-grip knobs. Once that’s in place, the transom motor is then affixed to the system’s pivoting mounting block just as it would be fastened to the boat’s transom.

For the wiring procedure, the trolling motor’s positive wire needs to be cut about four inches away from the battery fitting, saving the loose end for later use. A provided ProControll electrical male connection is crimped onto the end of the positive wire just cut.

The ProControll has two positive wires and one negative wire aesthetically enclosed alongside the cables coming from the foot pedal in a rubber shield. The positive wire with the battery terminal connection goes to the trolling motor battery’s positive terminal; the negative wire hooks to the battery’s negative post. The pedal’s other positive wire plugs into the modified power cable from the trolling motor. The trolling motor’s negative wire goes to the battery’s negative terminal. A high amperage relay provides the protective electrical communication link between the ProControll system and the trolling motor.

To hook up the steering capabilities, the foot pedal needs to be “rocked” into a level attitude. Then the trolling motor is positioned to run straight with the centerline of the boat. With that done, all steering functions are now controlled from the ProControll foot pedal. The pedal has a heel stop for easy no-look foot positioning.

ProControll’s highly flexible braided cable allows the foot pedal to be moved in the boat as desired up to its maximum length of seven feet. The trolling motor’s speed settings remain adjustable at the motor, but on/off functions are now controlled at the foot pedal. A three-position marine grade slide switch is recessed out of the way on the pedal’s right side for selection of: off, continuous on and momentary contact operation. In the momentary setting, the user can turn the motor on by holding foot pressure on a micro switch located on top of the foot pedal, and turn it off by releasing the pressure.

Of course, even after adaptation to the ProControll system, the transom motor can still be used as it was before conversion. During the installation process, the user just needs to crimp a provided electrical female connection to the battery fitting section that was cut from the motor’s power cord, allowing it to be easily reattached and used in its original form.

ProControll On The Water Soon

“We fish, too, and therefore have tried to think of all variables that anglers encounter while fishing from a boat equipped with a trolling motor,” added Mynster. “We believe we’ve done that with ProControll, while keeping form and function as simple as possible.”

“This product is definitely fisherman friendly,” said Rhodes. “We’re also confident that anglers will like the other products we’re working on right now at RM Industries, too.”

ProControll will be available this fall through fishing tackle and marine retail stores and will sell for around $110

Jewel and anglers benefit from Mustad process

Friday, July 31st, 2009 by ttnews

Jewel Bait Co. is the first fishing tackle manufacturer to take advantage of a new Alpha Code standardization process implemented by O. Mustad & Son A.S., the world’s largest hook manufacturer. Jewel president Gayle Julian says the trial run was perfect and that all their customers will benefit from a better product as a result.

“It’s only human nature to try something for the first time with reserve and skepticism,” Julian said. “But we just got our first run of Mustad test hooks made according to the procedure and they fit our mold perfectly. That’s really special because we built our precision aluminum mold in advance using only their Alpha system information. What we got was a hook built to our highest specs for style, size, strength and sharpness that fit our tight-tolerance mold exactly; what fishermen get is a better Jewel jig head.”

KG Enterprise, of Mountain Home, Arkansas, is the affiliated manufacturer for Jewel products and is known for its precision engineering of quality lead-cast products. Unlike most who work with lead, KG uses only self-made CNC-machined molds that aren’t as forgiving as the popular silicone molds. That leaves no room for error in mold design, and the end result is a higher quality product.

The inaugural effort for the Mustad Alpha system involved a totally new hook design for a brand new Jewel jig. The same hook is also being used for Jewel’s new “Squirrel Head” shaky head jig as part of the Jeff Kriet signature series.

“This hook didn’t even exist before we had a fully finished mold waiting for its arrival,” Julian added. “We couldn’t be happier with what Mustad delivered. We’re believers in this being a better mouse trap.”

Mustad officials say it was Geir Sivertzen, their global products manager from company headquarters in Norway, who recognized the need for consistent hook proportions six years ago while developing the world’s first and only proportionally correct fly hooks known as the Signature Series.

“Geir visited manufacturers in the United States and analyzed the production process,” explained Harry Simmons, Mustad’s North American OEM accounts manager. “He returned home frustrated that companies were using ‘available hooks’ instead of proportionally correct hooks that accurately fit the molds. By implementing the Alpha Code system, we can now produce jig hooks that will accurately and consistently fit the production molds.

“Mustad is the only hook manufacturer that draws its own wire, and each of our hooks has its own unique wire diameter,” Simmons continued. “Controlling this process allows us to use a proprietary blend of high carbon steel and draw it down at slower speeds to greatly reduce the possibility of stress cracks in the steel’s surface. No other hook manufacturer is doing this.  Product standardization is a huge competitive advantage for Mustad and our OEMs.”

Simmons went on to say that everything in the hook making process benefits from the Alpha system, including tempering, forging, finishes and sharpening. He says that’s why Mustad gets high marks for quality, as symbolized by the brand’s popular Ultra Point range featuring a proprietary mathematical sharpening process known as “4.3 Technology.”

“Mustad’s Alpha Code system and 4.3 Technology have made us a better company,” Julian reinforced. “We’re now enabled to build the finest Jewel products ever, and that simply reinforces what has always been our driving force … the pursuit of excellence in products and customer satisfaction.

PAA Begins Releasing Details of Their 3 Year Event Plan

Saturday, July 18th, 2009 by ttnews

The PAA begins releasing details of their 3 year event plan

The Professional Anglers Association continues to grow and gain momentum, and the details of the three year

event plan solidify their commitment to anglers of all skill levels.  For the upcoming 2010 tournament season, the

PAA will be expanding the trail to include four events with a unique twist.  The new fourth event of the season will

be a no entry fee tournament, with a comparable purse, and the field will consist of the top 100 competitors from

the first three events.  The Toyota Texas Bass Classic, going into its third year, has been a resounding success

thanks to Toyota’s commitment to the PAA and the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department. Based on the success and

the enthusiasms generated from the anglers at the Toyota Texas Bass Classic over the past two years, it has

become evident to the PAA that no entry fee events are key to their success.  This top 100 ranking will be based on

PAA Angler of the Year points at the conclusion of the third tournament of the series.   Like the 2009 Carrot Stix

Tournament Series, the 2010 series will be filmed for television and provide live streaming of the daily weigh-ins to

maximize angler exposure and public interaction.

In addition to the expansion of the 2010 event schedule, details of the plan also include a qualification system for

an additional series of no entry fee PAA All-Star events in 2011.  The All-Star field will be made up of 77 of the most

accomplished anglers in the world, from multiple tournament trails.  Approximately half the field will qualify

through the 2010 PAA Tournament Series, with the remaining competitors being selected from BASS, FLW, and

international competitions.  The top 12, based on Angler of the Year points, from the BASS Elite Series and FLW

Tour will all earn automatic berths into the All-Star Series; as will the overall AOY champions from the Women’s

Bassmaster Tour, BASS Opens, and FLW Series.  In addition to these consistent anglers, another group of

champions will also be invited to participate.  The overall Championship winners from the Bassmaster’s Classic,

FLW Forrest Wood Cup, Stren Series, TBF National Championship, Federation Nation National Championship, BFL

All American, as well as three international competitors will all be invited to the All Star Series to round out the

field.  This unique format will lead to a star studded field, with a mix of legendary anglers and the nation’s hottest

rising stars.

The new four event tournament series, on the schedule for the next three years, and the 2011 All-Star Series,

aren’t all the changes in store for anglers.  The PAA will also be inviting co-anglers to participate in their events,

with a new and exciting format to keep things interesting.  It is important to note that co-anglers are eligible to fish

the first three events of the season; however it will be an observer only format in all no entry fee events as part of

the plan.  According to John Crews, President of the PAA, “Our new three year event plan illustrates the PAA’s

desire to provide as many opportunities to compete as possible, while being conscious of the costs associated with

tournament competition.  In 2010 we will be keeping entry fees the same as this year, while working towards our

goal of high level competitions without entry fees.”

A complete explanation of the Three Year Event Plan, along with more specific details will be made available

on www.fishpaa.com in the coming weeks, as will scheduling, entry procedures, and all other pertinent

information.  Anglers interested in being included in informational releases about the upcoming season should

notify the PAA Offices, either via the web or direct line at 270-527-2030.

Frabill Hiber-Net – New Product

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009 by ttnews

How about this for a landing net concept? A broomstick. That’s right, a broomstick. Ok, so what about, you know, the net? It’s inside the handle. Yes, inside the handle. When you need it, the net pops right out with the ease of an umbrella. No more worrying about where to store the net in the boat. That’s because the hoop and netting disappeared. Poof, they went back inside the handle.

Frabill’s patented new Hiber-Net™ has made this unlikely concept a reality: the first completely portable, retractable landing net. Stored, it’s no bulkier than your nighttime running lights. It’s the first net that fits cleanly inside any standard rod locker. You’ll forget it’s even there…until you need it. Grab the handle, slide the grip forward, and out shoots a hoop and net, locking into place for the big moment.

“Hiber-Net is unquestionably the best portable landing net solution we’ve seen,” states Frabill Engineer, Ryan Kleckner. “And in over seventy years in the net business, we’ve seen more than a few.

The beauty of the Hiber-Net really lies in its simple, foolproof design, Kleckner believes. “There are no buttons or confusing push connections. All you do is slide the handle upward. You feel, see and hear the net lock into place, so there’s no way to overdo it. Hiber-Net retracts instantly, too. Just pull the Slide Grip back toward the handle. This unlocks the hoop and draws it back inside the tube.”

“I can’t imagine that there’s an angler out there who couldn’t use one of these,” says Dale Stroschein, professional guide and Frabill product tester. “Hiber-Net is the perfect all-purpose landing net. During my time on the pro walleye circuit, this net would have prevented a lot of hassles – fish lost when loose hooks tangled in the mesh, not to mention the damage that’s done to most nets when they’re stepped on or plain snagged. Hiber-Net eliminates all those worries. And it fits inside my rod box.”

And it’s as solid in construction as it is in performance. “Hiber-Net’s handle and hoop frames are built with heavy-walled, extruded aluminum,” reports Kleckner.” The Slide-Grip uses pultruded fiberglass springs, which power the automatic hoop lock. There’s no tension when the net’s retracted, so it never wears out. We use stainless steel hardware and anodized aluminum, too. The whole product is extremely corrosion resistant, so it works equally well in saltwater.”
More features: a premium rubberized handle yields sure-handed use. The netting itself is a soft, black poly mesh. Retracted, Hiber-Net is 52-inches in length, with a triangular-shaped hoop that’s 22- by 22-inches by 24-inches deep.

Says Stroschein: “Hiber-Net does what a good net’s supposed to do-land fish. But it also does what most fail to do-stow cleanly out of the way until you need it.”

Boyd Duckett No Longer with E21 Rods

Monday, July 13th, 2009 by ttnews

2007 Bassmaster Classic Boyd Duckett is no longer with E21, the company who produced the orange Carrot Stik fishing rod.

Some highlights why he parted:

Duckett said he has severed ties with E-21 because of “strong disagreements over construction of the Carrot Stix series rods” and “because of the financial instability” of the Toronto, Canada-based company. Duckett said he believes his reputation as an angler and businessman would have been damaged had he maintained his relationship with the company.

Duckett learned recently that the Carrot Stix rods being sold in stores are not built as Duckett and Whiting had originally discussed. The rods are different from the prototypes that won ICAST in 2007. The rods are also different than the Carrot Stix rods Duckett uses while fishing on tour.

“The bottom line is that we have strong differences of opinion over the whole Carrot Stix concept. For example, I’m concerned about the general quality of the rods being made and how warranties are being honored. And I’ve learned that there are too many warranty claims being made for me to continue putting my endorsement on the Carrot Stix. I don’t want any part of the direction E-21 is now going.”
